BT Scam?

Got this passed to me today.

WARNING

PLEASE PASS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY.

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 800 125.

Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this.

AND HE DID !!

My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made and he said credit card, there and then.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.

He hung up. I dialed 1471 - number withheld I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized., so I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam.

The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this.

How is it done?

This is good but not that clever.. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business.

The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back.

You could almost be convinced!

The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable.

By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number so that it can be used for far larger purchases.

Not a new one this. Got sent this years ago. Anyway, like the fact he uses the name John Peacock. Whatever happened to the news reporter Chris Peacock who started to call himself Christopher Peacock because kids in the street used to shout Crispy Cock at him?

Please - anything that says "PLEASE PASS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY." is a hoax designed to clog up your email and internet. Don't.

I'm merely passing on a message that looks plausible ???

Er, that's bollocks though. Either end can terminate the call. There's no way they'd be able to control your phone line.

I always felt sorry for his brother, Drew.

It works on resedential single analogue lines but not on business lines with digital ISDN lines as you can use more than one line via them. Bt would already have your account details and representatives would not need them if working for BT. I know because I work for a company that is a representaive of BT Wholsesale :)

You can on resedential lines :)

BT would write a letter to you first anyway! and they'd make certain that you contact them to pay. They wouldn't contact you by phone for a payment. Only a complete and utter fool would seriously give credit card and debit card numbers over to someone ringing them!

I'd normally agree with that sentiment, but in this instance Snopes and Hoax Slayer both report this as a genuine scam.

I stand corrected!

Worth posting the URLs?

And your contract would be with Virgin anyway, so nothing to do with BT. Gotta be an idiot to fall for these

I hate these wankers. Please tell me if the following would work. If you are fed up with these calls is it possible to buy yourself premium rate telephone number. Update everything on the internet with this number. Then it does not matter where your telephone number ends up, if it gets in the hands of these scammers they might accidently call you and then they are paying for it. I would be more than happy to keep them on the line for as long as possible. But it also might stop these calls completely.

No matter what you do your telephone number is out there. It is probably being sold on without your knowledge on the internet to foriegn companies. I just wish I could get hold of the bastards that sell our numbers on. Again its something the government should be looking in to. Its an invasion of privacy.

I can also bet you that even companies in the UK are giving your details away without your permission which is completely unacceptable.

The TPS means sod all. It does not work.

I had an email purporting to be from BT saying my diect debit bill payment hadn't gone through & they needed my bank account details to process it. Upon close inspection the BT logo wasn't quite right & there wasn't a name at the bottom it was just from
'customer services'. Needless to say I just deleted it & haven't heard any more since.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up. We get now so many unsolicited phone calls offering services that we haven't asked for that we are now suspicious of them all and it becomes a game to string them along until they give up - very satisfying. However I do worry about the elderly being drawn into such a scam so will definately pass on the word to the old folks.

We recently had the Virgin broadband scammers call us saying they had been authorised to sort out a glitch on behalf of Virgin media and asked me to log on and go through a spoof process before entering a 'special' password that would apply a patch to my PC for a modest fee (no doubt they would then ask for our credit card details). I guess the so called 'password' is some sort of malicious implant too. I didn't fall for that and when I said my PC showed a security warning and challenged the guy who then got a bit angry and passed me 'to his supervisor', who just sounded like another bloke in the same room. Didn't sound like the usual chaotic call centre in the background and both had an accent from about 5000 miles east of Brighton.

We also seem to have won the Nigerian lottery several times over despite never buying a ticket...........

What with the regular unsolicited and probably genuine phone calls about house insurance being due for renewal (it isn't) or trying to sell me insurance for Sky TV we don't bother answering calls showing 0800 numbers or 'international' calls now. However there must be enough gullible punters out there for them to persist.
