It's worth a punt. Playing like England has got us nowhere.

We`ll need another 90 managers other than Gus and Arsene then.

He could at least have said 'we have to play like Brighton'

Not sure what the wanker sign is for.

For me, it's a perfectly logical statement. Spain showed everyone how to play football last year. Keep the ball, pass it round, deny the opposition the ball, win matches. Doing it the English way has clearly not worked, and never will.

For a lower, third-division level of the way the Spanish play in England, watch (when they're on their game) the way Brighton & Hove Albion play.

Given that we have just made Andy Carroll the most expensive England player I think I can predict how things will pan out for the next England generation.

Next new thread will be Gus is leaving to take over as manager of England

Once he's won everything he can with us, (take 3-4 years from now to do Champ title, Prem, Champs league, Europa Cup, World Club Cup etc) I'd be delighted for Gus to take over at England.

He could at least have said 'we have to play like Brighton'

I think that is more or less what he did say.

He talked about being able to play 442 451 and 433 all in the same game, with rotating forwards etc.

To answer your question, Brooking has caught the FA bug of talking a good game, but having retired a long time ago, is, imo, out of touch. I understand the logic , but wish we had a bit of ooommmpphh behind us. Instead of ploughing millions into one central national academy, why not have several dotted around the country etc.... don't start on Gareth Southgate either!!!

We have tried the continental approach and been shit, I reckon we should go back to playing like Wimbledon. It's the only way we can even be vaguely competitive, we are clueless trying to play like Continentals. Time for a bit of glorious failure again methinks rather than meekly giving up like we did in SA.

Brooking may have been a great technical footballer but he is one of the world's dullest men to listen to.

I disagree TFM. I feel Brooking is firmly in touch, talking to many if not all the clubs about what's to be done, and has been battling the FA for years to try and get them to get their own heads out of the trough and back into football.

He must go into work every day thinking he has to work with a right bunch of self-important airheads, only interested in keeping the gravy train flowing.

The principal problem, I believe (of course I don't know), of English football is the fact that there are THREE bodies running it, all with their own agendas, none of which concurs with the others. Until that is resolved, people like Brooking will forever be pissing in the wind.

Ahd, I'm afraid TLO, the airheads will win all day long. Long after Brooking gives up, they will be there, milking as much as they can. Let's hope they are not on the guest list at Falmer !!

That's probably what he meant. He was at Vicarage Road when the boys were in town and must have been pretty impressed. Perhaps he was there because of what he had heard. Or perhaps he was just scouting for West Ham next season.

Newbury, Berkshire.
I heard him on 5-Live yesterday evening together with the Prem League head of youth development and the Chelsea Academy boss and he spoke a lot of sense, about ensuring that young players learn the technical and not the competitive side of the game early in their training, and that those coaching them ensure they play the ball out from the defence, don't rely on a single target man, and so in the long term that outfield players can slot into any position on the pitch, where they would have learnt sufficient technique to fill-in if required. He made the point that if you look at the Barcelona squad you'd be hard pushed to seperate midfielders from forwards, and that's because they have the technical skills to fullfill both roles, learning these at a very early stage of their development.
