Broadband will get you a load more viruses unless you get a firewall and some good anti-virus software too (which I'd get anyway to get rid of whatever it is on your computer at the moment).

Of course I have a Mac so viruses are not really an issue:)

Though I have a firewall and anti-virus anyway.

Which is why you should buy Norton. Most of these freebies are not as comprehensive as software you pay for.

Norton Internet Security 2005 edition - I paid around £26 3 months ago - no problems since (touch wood!)

Just do a search on google or kelkoo.co.uk etc

http://computing.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/d...in&title=norton+internet+security&field=price

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/st...al=sw_homepage&fm=3&sm=undefined&tm=undefined

Or try some other 'system' software - you really won't need to spend more than £30

That's the price you pay for using the net although I think you shouldn't pay more than £30 for Norton Anti Viris. McAhee is a bit less but not as good. For a firewall you could use the Windows XP one (assuming you have XP). I use Zonealarm Pro but I had that before I had XP. You also should get hold of a copy of Adaware and Spybot to help you with spyware issues, they can both be downloaded free from www.download.com.

Finally, assuming you use Internet Explorer I suggest you download the Google Tool bar which is free (Open Google and type 'Google Toolbar'). This does a pretty good job of blocking adverts. PM me if you need any help.

Right if you have a virus installing a virus package may not spot it.

To determine if you have a virus firstly go download and run stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

or and run the free online virus checker housecall (I recommend both)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

both of which will bypass any safety measures put in place by virus wankers to avoid detection after infection.

If you think you have a virus always scan in safe mode and if its scumware as opposed to a virus then some av's will not get rid of it or even notice its there.

Once you have checked and got rid of any virus's then is the time to install AV and firewalls.
