why is our team so poor after we pour millions of pounds of funding at it

Have we? I haven't noticed any more facilities being built or competitors being sponsored to take time off work to train.

Until we have sports scholarships at Universities so that athletes can train every day with decent facilities then we will never have an advantage.

Schools are giviing up on competitive sports because the losers may be damaged mentally for life by losing a race.

This is incorrect. The school I teach at encourages competitive sport and there is a system in place whereby pupils compete at various levels within a county, regional and national structure. I would imagine the problem lies with motivation, I was reading an article recently on why there were so many Russian women tennis players in the top 50 and one of the reasons they gave was that the will to succeed is much stronger both with children and parents because success has a financial reward which would enable that family to raise itself within the structures of Russian society. Those in richer western countries have a number of other alternatives within mainstream life to follow if they don't succeed at their chosen sport.

tennis is in even worse state in the wimbledon qulis at rohampton in 5 mens singles the brits won 5 games not even a set when you add all there games together

in eastbourne 1 female tennis player got through the first road and i dont think we have one female tennis player in top 200

It's a fact that most of the successful athletics nations fund their competitors more than we do.

Remember the case of Fiona May from Derby, who was a world juinior long jump champion.

She was clearly someone who could win things for the UK but was never given the adequate funding for the necessary training.

When she married an Italian pole vaulter, she had the opportunity to compete for Italy. She switched because the Italians gave her the money for the warm weather training, etc. Result, she went on to win world titles for the Italians.

I'm always left with the feeling that football tends to suck the sponsorship and TV money out of most other sports in this country.

They might as well; they let anyone else into Universities these days.

Sorry Yorkie, I reckon that's another Daily Mail myth. I'd be more worried about the huge numbers of school sports fields sold off under Thatcher and Blair. At the school I went to, we had an hour round trip to our sports fields which weren't even in the same London borough. That was a lot of time spent sitting on buses when I should have been mentally damaging my classmates with my athletic prowess.
