We are going via Midhurst / Newbury and joining M4 there then straight down - around 3 hr drive.
Pointless going up to M25 and round to M4

Live 10 miles or so from Ashton Gate but make regular trips back to Sussex.
We always go A/M27, M3, A34, M4. Once you get past roundabout-land (Chichester) you'll only have to slow from regulation 95mph twice - once when you go M3 - A34, and another when you go A34 - M3.
Choices then are:
M32 which takes you into Bristol City centre. Follow signs for Bristol Airport which will take you right past Ashton Gate.
Or, on the M4, carry on and take M5 South. Come off at A4 (I think it is) - probably signed Bristol Zoo/Bristol Airport. Follow the road down along the Avon, under the Suspension Bridge and you'll be about there.
Parking is pretty horrendous - so just park where you can - people park everywhere - as you'll see.
