Bring back Barry Lloyd, say Bring back Barry Lloyd

The reality of the situation was that in Division Three, the wage bill would be lower than in Division Two. The board also calculated that it was easier to have a winning team in the Third Division, and seeing a winning team could bring back supporters.

Mullery was appointed as he was one of the few managers that was popular enough with the fans to be able to deliver further cuts to the side pre-season while keeping the fans on board. The plan was always to bring Barry Lloyd in, with his knowledge of non-league football and ability to find cheaper players from there. Mullery was royally stitched up.

Then used the excuse that Mullery lived too far away Banstead, to sack him. I always maintained that he could get from his home in Banstead to The Goldstone quicker than the Hinshlewoods from Selsey going through the roundabouts of Chichester and then Arundel and Worthing on the A27.

In fairness to Barry Lloyd he did build a couple of reasonable teams during his time here, He signed a few donkeys in his time as well but some of his signings were good. Gotsmanov, Byrne, Small, Beeney, Curbishley, Nelson to name a few.

edit...Not forgetting Nicky Bissett who was on he verge of a £400k move to Ipswich Town ( I think it was ) until he had his leg broken badly that ultimately went on to finish his career.

He also had a knack of signing complete cart horses.
Grant Horscroft and Gavin Geddes in particular.

Barry Lloyd had to sell Mark Beeney to Leeds for £ 100,000 to pay the VAT debt that had caused the Inland Revenue to put a Winding Up order against the club in the courts in 1991.

He had to sell Dean Saunders for similar reasons as already mentioned.

Given the financial limitations of what he could spend, bringing on players like John Crumplin, Ian Chapman and John Robinson, and mixing them with experienced 2nd tier pro's like Byrne, Pates, Chivers, and Walker was EXACTLY the strategy that Hyppia should be doing now.

Remember that Lloyd was previously a Chelsea scout, and his links were instrumental in bringing in so many ex Chelsea pro's like Doug Rougvie, Colin Pates, Clive Walker, Dale Jasper and Keith Dublin. Many teams during his reign were definitely ' Chelsea Lite '.

This is how I remember it.
Really irritated me when he stated things like, " wouldnt be a disaster if Brighton were relegated", he also suggested Brighton players should become part time, always delivered with a smirk.
.

Did he? Don't recall that at all.

In terms of his media skills, should he have been like Lee Clark and not make any eye contact?

Managers are a lot better at it now, but if you felt it was a smirk/inappropriate smile or similar - fair enough.

I will make one very simple statement of FACT:

Regardless of whether you loved Barry or loathed him, Lloyd got Brighton & Hove Albion nearer to the Premier League than Gus Poyet ever did.

He also presided over two relegations to one promotion, whereas Gus merely presided over one promotion.
