The Open House. Over-priced and the worst bar staff in Britain. The Park View isn't too great either

Not the real one
Park view(crap beer, crap service, crap decor), open house (for reasons explained already and shit beer), Spanish lady (because it could be sooo good if someone decent renovated and took over, it's got the view of the sea that make you feel you're drinking on a boat) but it's an embarrassing shithole.

In that order

full of dicks. turned into a lifestyle pub. seconded.

Baskets is a classic, also serves HSB, officially the Captains best beer. Also I don't think you can criticise a pub for being 'too small'. It's only over priced on lager. And if you drink larger in there it's like going to a curry house and ordering something without spices!

I have a lingering strong dislike for the Dorset but I guess that's barely a pub

'The Mash Tun' was used to rebrand The Porthole in Cornfield Terrace, Eastbourne about 15 years ago. It was promoted as 'a slice of Brighton life' or something equally patronising/ culturally imperialistic/ downright offensive. For that reason alone I am happy to support The Mash Tun in this competition.

......... and if they still have their hilarious 'celebrity death' thing going on then even more so

If we are including Hove in this then The Seafield deserves a look in, it's a khazi, or at least it was the last time I was in there, which is the last time I will ever go in there.

any pub that serves food on pieces of wood/ bits of slate

pubs with month old copies of The Friday Ad/ Argos catalogues on their bookshelf

pubs with the brightly coloured stars on the optics, promoting their house doubles (particularly when they are the cheapest shit ersatz spirit brands from Bookers)

pubs with flat roofs

pubs with bar staff text messaging behind the bar (this is a real game changer for me, I f***ing hate it)

pubs with badly kept beer

pubs with Stella

pubs next to railway stations

pubs that have 'Magic FM', or similar as their music policy

pubs with music too loud for my liking

pubs showing 'Sky Sports News'

pubs with 'humorous' names

I'm not a big fan of carpet in pubs either (apart from in The Bow Street Runner, which is an absolutely superb little pub)

I could continue and probably will

...........oh and I was in The Basketmakers earlier this week (not by choice) and the witty messages in the tins on the wall were anything but.

I have four locals all equi distant. 1) The Station @pprestonparkstn superb untouched old pub great atmosphere when the footie or Rugby is on and the local for Andy Stewart Big Bucks owner who, if you engage him in normal conversation might give you a snippet from Nicholls yard. 2) the Crown and Anchor recently pounced up, overpriced, soulless ,wannabe er Dyke Tavern.
3) The Dyke Tavern utterly ridiculous and utterly pretentious boozer who still haven't cracked the Dyke Road Avenue crowd. The DRT used to have a great Sunday quiz and a meat raffle and was often frequented by Cassandra's Dad . Every time I am forced to go there now I ask the bewildered staff "what time is the meat raffle." this gets my vote as Brighton's worst pub.
4) The Brewey Tap brilliant and my choice almost every time.

* CONTROVERSY ALERT *

Oh I don't know. The prices are no worse than its neighbours, and the bar staff are pretty decent and courteous. The Open House of three years ago - I'd agree.

However, if it's rude bar staff you're after - nowhere tops The Great Eastern. Surly, non-engaging, miserable and rude. I think that's covered those bases.

Just because I can I'm rejecting that one. The prices are no worse than its neighbours, and the bar staff are pretty decent and courteous. The Open House of three years ago - I'd agree.

I'll second 'The Great Eastern' for the service I've had in their on a few occasions

That is one utter shite hole, and so it deserves to be fourth-ed.

Consider the Branch Tavern fifth-ed

And a nomination here for the Park View for the ever-lousy service and its sole use as a post-nursery hangout for yummy mummies and their spoilt sprogs, accompanied at weekends by their braying partners.
