A few years back I began researching pubs in the parish of Brighton and so far have found 552. The numbers appear to have peaked around 1900 after which closures began and have continued ever since.

Edward Street had the most, the list below is from my database and researched from Trade Directories.

(Name - number - opened - closed):
Abysinnia Arms 91a 1869 1907
Alliance 140 1867 ?
Beckenham Tavern 13 1867 1871

Duke of Baden 67 1885 1903
Elephant Tavern 14 1839 1936 (Previously known as William IV)
Golden Boot 56 1859 1894

Don't think you will find it's quite as simple as that. There are a myriad of reasons, more stringent drink & driving regulations, and the simple fact that it's a lot cheaper to drink at home now, are two of them.
I’m only going on what landlords tell me guess they must be wrong then.

Disappointed to call in to the wonderfully characterful Victory which has barely changed in 50 years and be told that it’s going to be “refurbished” to look just like every other pub.
