Brighton Marathon 2011 - All General Entry Places are now Sold

The organisers of the 2011 Brighton Marathon have announced that the last of the 10,000 General Entry places was filled on Thursday.

This means that the only way runners can now enter the 2011 Brighton Marathon is through the charities. REMF has 10 charity places to fill and we have 8 months to recruit runners – deadline is 4 February 2011.

The advice that the organisers are giving is that October, November and December are the key months for charities to recruit runners. The London Marathon ballot results are announced in October and over 100,000 runners will be rejected.

Most charities fill their charity places by inviting applicants to guarantee that they will raise a minimum amount of sponsorship. The average fundraising target set by charities for the Brighton Marathon this year was £500, compared to the average £1000 - £3000 target that charities ask runners to raise for the London Marathon.

REMF is likely to be inviting expressions of interest later in the year and then selecting its team of charity runners on the basis of how much they are prepared to pledge. Hopefully, we’ll get some considerable interest.

We already have a team of runners who have been successful in applying for a General Entry place. They will be raising money through their own sponsors – and, of course, REMF is not setting any minimum targets for those runners.

We do, however, intend to be supporting all our runners, not only on the day, but through the long training period. The General Entry runners will be receiving information shortly about how we intend to do that.

This is the first time that REMF has officially ventured into a marathon event. It is a fantastic opportunity to raise a substantial amount of money to support our work to bring footballing opportunities to disadvantaged young people.

We’d like to thank everyone who has already put their name forward for Brighton 2011. We hope that this event will be as successful as the annual football match against the Palace supporters and the Golf Day, both of which are firmly established parts of the REMF calendar.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support.

Brilliant stuff if you could attract 10 people each pledging £500.
You've got yourself £5k before REMF even starts!

Knowing nothing about running, do you think the Brighton Marathon could eventually become as big as the Great Northern Run?

I think the Brighton Marathan is an excellent idea. I wonder if it will ever get on TV?
