Pompey and Southampton have other (better and faster) alternatives. Traffic from the west of Brighton, however, is a different kettle of fish, if it relieves some of the pressure on the BML (which is the whole point, not increasing the footfall from Dorking and Leatherhead, which isn't the point).
Maybe it's a case for a smaller train provider to take on as a specialist service - good publicity and image, attract the custom.
Birmngam to London, for instance, is WCML and Virgin trains - or not necessarily. A much smaller provider, Chiltern, provides a service from Moor Street, Birmingham to Marylebone - takes a few minutes longer, but cheaper, cleaner, more leg-room than Virgin; it's doing fine!
Worthing and Hove to London - a few minutes longer, but less aggro....there's a potential market for you! ......and the cost of an east to north spur at Ford is pennies compared to re-opening Lewes to Uckfield!
Virgin haven’t operated the WCML for about 4 years. It’s Avanti. Same trains though.

Not seen it mentioned in the thread but it was 60 years ago yesterday that the first Beeching report, leading to so many closures was published.

Nor have I seen it mentioned that the Minister for Transport at the time, the one who authorised the closure of the railways and the building of new roads had a huge financial investment in a construction company that, er, built motorways.

And that's how we got to the current situation ...

Politicians lining their (and their pals) pockets with public money.

Thank goodness we've moved on from those days...

It certainly has been referred to on NSC before! Of course, it's a scandalous accusation that the Right Honourable Ernest Marples was in an way compromised. On becoming Minister of Transport he immediately disposed of all his shares in the construction company.

He transferred them to his wife...............

The last time this was looked at, the conclusion was not to start driving new railway lines through East Sussex but to get the current line’s capacity improved (as you highlight). The problem with the Uckfield route is that you either drive an expensive tunnel through the downs after Falmer to bypass Lewes (which will do nothing to help Lewes, Eastbourne or Seaford), or come into Lewes from the east on the existing line and then branch off to Uckfield (which will do nothing to help Brighton). Geography and housing stops you coming into Lewes from Brighton and then heading north, without going out of Lewes eastwards and then reversing back into the station
