Middlesbrough lead race for Mills
Mills is no longer a first-team regular at Elland Road
Player profile: Danny Mills
Middlesbrough are favourites to sign Leeds full-back Danny Mills on a season-long loan deal.
Boro and Birmingham have both made approaches for the England full-back.
BBC Sport understands that Mills is keen to stay and fight for his place.
But, if he is forced to leave by Elland Road boss Peter Reid, the player's preferred destination is Middlesbrough.
Boro boss Steve McClaren told this website: "Yes, there is an interest in Danny Mills."
McClaren, who secured a season-long loan deal for Gaizka Mendieta on Thursday, is now set for talks with the England full-back over the weekend.
Reid insisted that he would not be forcing Mills out of Leeds.
"I've had a chat with Danny and he could be moving on loan," he said.
"I have never questioned Danny's attitude in training, it has been excellent, but we did have a chat about the quality of his performance in pre-season games.
"He's not in the squad and if that's being frozen out it's frozen out, but I pick a squad that I think is going to win the game.

The loaning out of Danny Mills will just be the icing on a very disgusting cake

"In training he has been smashing but in the games in pre-season I have not seen him. I would be an idiot if I thought a player wasn't playing well and played him in the team.
"If he stays I will see what he's like in games, I will have a look at Danny and I'm sure he will improve but I can't pick him on what I have seen recently in football matches."
That is likely to be enough to force Mills out at Elland Road, and Birmingham have also confirmed their move to sign him on loan.
Blues manager Steve Bruce also confirmed his club's move, telling BBC WM: "He is somebody we've shown an interest in.
"It's way down the line because he's been away with England.
"I've spoken to his manager Peter Reid, and I can't say any more until I've spoken to him again. But I can say he's somebody we're interested in."
