It started in the 70s , I think England fans thought the opposition didn't play well enough to give 'mighty' England a decent game so to inspire them they would wind them up by booing their anthems. It worked a treat, loads of fired-up foreigners desparate to make England pay for being so disrespectful. And by and large they did.

I wish we didn't do it, it just makes us look weak and scared.

I was in Porto for Holland v Germany, the Dutch totally obliterated the German anthem and after that the Germans played them off the park.

The booing was funny at the time, but ultimately counterproductive.

booing national anthems is just part of the banter.
i like it.
people should not get so upset about it.
when another country's fans boo our national anthem, it doesn't really bother me cos it is just part of the banter. It bothers me about as much as 'does your boyfriend know your here' which i also don't give a monkeys about.

i see your point in a way cos it wouldn't bother me if our anthem was booed, but i think that some people (including foreigners) may find it deeply disrespectful, and for that reason it's a no no for me....

I still think I probably did the British national anthem more disrespect at Cardiff by just standing there, with a Tricolour on, and waiting for it to be over.... considering I didn't seem to be in a Republican block or anything, I think I was the only one not singing.

But booing another countries national anthem is completely wrong. They may be crap old dirges, but it is legally "sacred" to the other country

errrrrrrrrm! and why are we surprised at this behaviour....?

We are talking about footy fans when all is said and done............... the same ones who beat sh*t out of each other, and get to their 30's and 40's and still can't see that this behaviour is wrong and juvenile..... they are the same fans who come up with such moving dittiies as . "Who are ya.? who are ya?".................. and despite all the negative publicity, still go to games with Burberry paraphanalia on and wonder why they are the subject of police scrutiny.

The clues are there chaps..................

I'm gonna bounce this for two reasons:

1) because Sven has commented on it today and I wonder if it will happen tonight

2) because no bugger took a nibble at my comments and shouted me down.... I was quite dissappointed.

Way out west
Didn't appear to happen tonight, guess our fans thought it would be pointless trying to wind up Portugal...
