In my Merc the service light comes on when it has done a certain mileage since the last service. It'd be a guess to say its the same in a BMW, so I'd get it checked out but its probably nothing wrong just a predefined interval.

I have one and I have looked in the manual and there is nothing to tell you that there is an MOT due. As said above, its probably the "service" warning light. This is predefined when you get the car or have a service by the system.
