if you read all the various articles about this in detail, you'll see that their defence was that the MD (Derek Shaw) didn't have authority to award a 3 year contract in the first place, and thus any compensation should be limited to 1 year's salary as that's all he had authority to do. That was rejected in court today. It was also revealed in court that Blackburn have applied to have their parachute payment for next year to be released early so they can pay him off - genius!
