Whilst away on business last week I met someone who claimed to have worked under Bill Archer, and said he knew him very well.
He maintained that the Albion would be in their new stadium by now if the fans had not kicked up such a fuss and just accepted a 2 year ground share at Fratton.

Well it shows what a f***ing idiot you are for believing this. Here's a fact you are clearly ignorant of...

The deal to move to Portsmouth was signed, sealed and delivered. Archer came in and completely undid it, believing Portsmouth was too far away - thereby annoying Portsmouth Football Club, and completely ruining any chances of a groundshare with them.

I would say 'nice try...', but I won't, because it was total shit.

That last sentence is just such obvious bollocks it makes me mad. WHY would we be in a new ground if we'd shared for two years at Pompey instead of two years of Gillingham?? Would Bill Archer have been able to override Planning law and not get Lewes DC to object to a new ground? Would he f***!

No, he would have tried to put it somewhere were nobody would support it, like Toads Hall Valley (which Bellotti promoted) and all the other places since rubbished in the PI.

Bill Archer WAS a ****, IS a **** and always will be a ****.

come on dont sit on the fence ... what do you think of Archer.

I think that we would have been a hell of a lot nearer having a ground as he had the money to 'buy' his way
I've absolutely NO DOUBT that Archer believed that he could use his money to buy what he wanted.

That's why he appoinrted Bellotti as Chief Executive. A senior politician would use his influence to trample over the planning system and get whatever Archer wanted.

As it happens, local government isn't as corrupt as Archer believes it to be.

The fact that Bellotti was a councillor (and a much disliked councillor, as it happens) meant that he stood no chance whatsover of getting the people who worked in the planning system to cut corners on his behalf.

I am sure that you are right aboutBellotti but not so certain about local government not being so corrupt as Archer thought.

Most councillors are working peole and as the saying goes everybody has their price.

I get slated for saying it but have Tescos ever failed to get what they wanted. They buy their way into anywhere by paying for something that the local council want and the 2 local examples I would give are Guildford and Broadbridge Heath.

There's a hell of a lot of difference between legitimate planning gain negotiated with developers by a local authority on behalf of its residents and corruption.

Planning gain rules are heavily controlled by Acts of Parliament.

The latest is The Planning-gain Supplement (Preparations) Act 2007, which sets the ball rolling for standard rates of charges to be made to developers who benefit from the increase in land values that arise from development.

You might see this as developers "buying their way into anything". It's more like a tax on development, with the proceeds benefitting the public.

Corruption only arises when the "negotiations" are non-existent or underhand and the developers get away WITHOUT having to pay.

And that simply doesn't happen these days.

As for councillors or council officers making personal gains from development ... that has always been a criminal offence, punished invariably by imprisonment. It doesn't happen.

well Easy 10, remember the excellent Clough quote.

"Get rid of hooligans in football? we'll have to start with the 92 league club chairmen first"

Just because you see a new Tesco's go up, you automatically assume they got what they wanted (and where they wanted). Never that straight forward (although having money to bankroll a complete project obviously helps), the full planning process is unbelievable irrespective of what the local council wants.

Even with little money, we ourselves may one day see Falmer go up (I hope), but it would be a falsehood to say it was what we wanted. Most fans by choice would have plumped for a larger footprint, scaled up not down, at Waterhall.

Then why did you post it? Attention-seeking, or was that statement I've just quoted a lie?

why do you reply to attention seekers then........................

attention seeking ?

if you dont like the gist of it keep out of it. There is genuine reasons for debate on the whole Archer topic. I don`t believe anything the man said but I do know that not everything bad that happens to us nowadays can all be contributed to just one man - Archer.

I was relaying what one man said. I was not offering an opinion.
( for once )

What might have happened had we stuck with one of the richest men in Britain (now)

Its just conjecture mate not attention seeking.
