I could have guessed luxury flats. I hope the former residents have moved into suitable new accommodation.
My wife worked at the Ovingdean home for nearly 20 years, and she said that the building had become too big for the number of residents.
The aim of the charity had changed and was more focused on helping blinded ex-service personnel to live independently.

That was my Granddad's favourite retort when I told him we won. Who against? St Dunstan's reserves?

This makes me feel better. Makes sense. My wife used to work in disability and mental health and has said there has been a similar change from tucked away in homes to living in the community.

Although I have never visited the iconic building. I feel a strange connection having passed by hundreds of times on the bus as a child.

I remember one of my friends worked at St Dunstan's and used to arrange football matches on a tennis court with a ball with bells in it. One time he popped off to the loo and when he came back they were all gone.

He asked someone at the bus stop if they knew where they had gone and got told that the police had arrived, arrested them and taken them all away.

Apparently they were kicking the shit out of a team of Morris Dancers.

I'll get my coat

Don't be fooled by all the the neg ferrets on this thread. It's a cracking shirt and I bought one for my son! Possibly much shirt better in real life than the picture.

Here from the blind veterans' web site:

"Elizabeth II made her first visit to our centre in Ovingdean in July 1962. Accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Review, our magazine for blind veterans, the following month describes The Queen making a speech saying: ‘To loud applause, Her Majesty rose to speak. She said: “Thank you for your kind welcome. As Patron of St. Dunstan’s I am very pleased to have this opportunity of coming here with my husband and seeing this Home at Ovingdean where, every year, many St. Dunstaners come for holidays and convalescence, while others stay here to learn a trade or craft. One wishes the best of good luck to you all and to your families and to all St. Dunstaners in this country and overseas.”

We lived in Rottingdean at the time.
We walked over the hill and lined up on the road with little union flags to wave. I was four. Remember it well.
Is this or is this not a quality bit of thread derailment?

Someone who sits near me was wearing one at the Liverpool game. Looks a lot better in person than the images online suggest. Not sure I’d be wearing it tho.
