Betfair - Will They Play FAIR?

Just been checking my betfair account - big winnings on 'Tournament Sixes / 371 and Over' thank you for asking.

Then this 'losing' bet caught my eye:

'Group C World Cup 2007 / Winner / Sri Lanka'

They've marked this as Lost.

Not surprising as they were in Group B. Which they won. Obviously.

So... whoever matched my bet has my money. I want it back, plus the winnings. Have mailed Betfair, but will be interesting to see what happens. Schoolboy error innit

Yup, that's what I was thinking. Which would be the case with a traditional bookie. But this is a betting exchange. What if the layer's buggered off somewhere and closed his account not believing his good luck? Betfair are just the middle-men matching backers and layers. Cos technically the layer is in the right as well. Sri Lanka did NOT win Group C, they won Group B.

Well, we'll see what they say. But if they're acting as market-maker, and they make a false market, then it's interesting waters. The amount at stake is pretty piddling, but it's how they react that will be very interesting, and may well dictate whether I close my account with them - and shop 'em to the Racing Post etc. . I reckon they'll as a minimum return my stake. Maybe even give me my winnings. We'll see.

That wasn't a bet on the Group C winner, it was a bet on the outright winner. All bets for the outright winner have Group C written before it for no apparent reason in your statement. If you check your other bets for outright winner they will all say Group C winner, including Australia.

scams have included, laying bets on known non runners in ante post events and laying,lets say dogs in graded races at odds of 1.01 to punters who are using the site of even a PC for the first time, I wonder if this was deliberate?

Betfair have now written back saying exactly that:

"The bet id actually refers to the outright world cup
winners market. As you are aware Australia won the world cup. You are correct that Sri Lanka were winners of Group B.
There is however a technical glitch in our system that shows on users account statements that that bet refers to winners of Group C when in fact it refers to the outright winners market.
This only shows on your account statement, when you placed your bet you placed your bet on the Outright Winner Market not on the winner of Group C market therefore your account will not be credited with any potential win."

Could have sworn I backed them to win their group AND win the World Cup outright. Will now have to re-check. Mind you the competition's been dragging on for bloody YONKS so I guessI could have made a mistake. Doh! Doh! And thrice Doh!
