Have only been to Mecca once, but this is what I did there and back and worked perfectly. Easy ride out to the ground. At the end, I found 2 empty 25s sitting there (whilst the station was jam-packed), and got back into town and Brighton station before anyone else. That was an evening game though, and it was the Palace match.
