But made famous by an Irish band (led by a singer born in Pembury, Kent).

Think you are confusing music with politics; it says songs from Ireland, not songs from the Republic. And some of the songs posted were written before the North was even created. Ireland as a country has been around far longer than political claims to it's lands.

No, its just that Eire is referred to Ireland, and Ulster as Northern Ireland.

The Foreign Office on their advice for overseas travel has: Foreign travel advice Ireland. This is in respect of Eire not the entire Island.

Right on both counts. Written in Tonypandy, Rhondda Valley as Ewan Maccoll confirmed when I saw him live. It's a difficult choice but I'd go for Ordinary Man by Christy Moore.
