Without wishing to get to deeply into this, it's my understanding that there's no evidence he ever actually downloaded or possessed any child porn (his caution was for accessing a website, whether you believe his stated reasons for that is up to you).

Yes, for paying to access the website. Obviously I've never met the man, but given there's not been any other accusations against him and most if not all of the people who do know him apparently accept his explanation I'm inclined to do the same.

He used his own credit card. I think he said he was abused when younger and was doing research on a book. The book is still to be written

As I wrote in reply to somebody else, everybody involved who actually investigated was apparently satisfied with his explanation. I should be clear at this point that I obviously don't think it was remotely sensible or acceptable for him to carry out his own personal investigation into child pornography in the way he claims to have attempted. But I also don't think there's any actual evidence to support accusing him of anything worse than what he was specifically convicted for.

I think I'd find it more suspicious if he'd used somebody else's credit card. And I don't think it particularly odd that, having been given a caution and with all the publicity around it, he didn't carry on regardless with whatever it was he was apparently writing.
