Just read the article: -

Wholeheartedly agree with Alan McGhee about The Sound. Fab band that no-one ever heard of.

As for Simple Minds - Empires and Dance IS a brilliant record, but then most of their stuff up to (and, grudgingly including) New Gold Dream was a lot more experimental and well worth a listen. Far better than the blander stuff that followed imho.

Why grudging about New Gold Dream? Because it was successful? That is a superb record with the chart hits not being the best music on it.

Wire - 154
Gene Clark - No Other
Dead Can Dance - In the Realm Of A Dying Sun, or Aion
Affinity - Affinity (1970 progressive)
The End - Introspection (1968 psych)
David McWilliams - David McWilliams (vol 2)
The Idle Race - Idle Race (their 2nd LP)
The Eyes Of Blue - In Fields of Ardath
East of Eden - Mercator Projected
Simple Minds - Sister Feelings/Sons and Fascination 2LP (and why not the SMs, that was obscure at the time)

Actually you're right. New Gold Dream itself is pretty superb for the most part.

It's just a shame that Promised You a Miracle and Glittering Prize were hits (and I'm not over keen on either) and they seemed to set the tone for what came after.

I still like bits of Sparkle in the Rain and Once Upon A Time but seemed a downhill slope once they'd hit the charts.

Remember they didn't write Don't You Forget About Me, which is still one of my fave songs by anyone.

regarding 'Spain' and obscurity

a bit of research reveals that the sum of their commercial success is reaching #43 in 1998 in Australia with single 'Everytime I Try'

they're only Album chart success was 2 weeks on the Norwegian chart

suitably obscure

Totally baffling though. They're superb musicians and wrote some great songs.

IMHO Momus released some classic albums on Creation in the late 80s - Tender Pervert and The Poison Boyfriend being two. An underrated genius, who else could have written a very dark tongue in cheek song about the apparent love between Torville and Dean entitled 'Love on Ice'

New Gold Dream was special for tracks like 'King is White and In The Crowd' and 'Someone, Somewhere, in Summertime' (get the 12" as well, as it's worth it to just have the neat little guitar intro that wasn't on the album version).

Charlie Burchill is one of those great overlooked guitarists, because he played in an era and genre outside of 'rock'. John McGeogh of Magazine and Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Lu Edmonds from Shriekback are others that won't make the guitar-hero lists.

You might also know of 'YOU', an album they did a few years later - it's excellent.

I'd recommend Hawkwind - 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' also.

You is also great, as for Hawkwind, I've always struggled to get into their albums, prefer to just hear some of theirs every now and then.

How about Steve Hillage then? Album called "L"

Most Green On Red albums were scandalously ignored.

agreed

Chuck Prophet's solo stuff is top draw as well Brother Aldo possibly being the pick of the bunch - the guitars on 'Tune Of An Evening' are f***ing SUPERB
