Apart from the obvious, what do you all reckon the best derby is? Or the best non-Brighton one you've been to? No suggestion too weird, all criteria considered.

Apart from engagements at Jongleurs SE25, the best one I've been to was Chievo against Verona a couple of years ago. Real contempt from the Verona old hands for the plucky new boys, full house, cracking atmosphere.

And I'm thinking about going to Monaco v Nice this year. Now that's what I call a location for a derby (even if the frogs know nothing about football).

Only derby I've been to other than us against the scum is Stoke v Vale.

This is the basic idea:

Stoke spend the week before expressing how much contempt they've got for Vale.

On the day, Vale fans are smuggled across the city by police so that they don't get murdered by Stoke nutbags. (They take 3,000 for a match 4 miles from their ground btw).

Vale win the game, the atmosphere in the Stoke end turns ugly as the Vale mutants (protected by an impassable wall of day glo jackets) proceed to rip the seats out of the away end, hilariously the wind is against them and the seats blow back in their faces.

After the game the Stoke burberry boys hang around growling with knuckles dragging along the floor at breakneck speek as they try to evade the police.

Vale fans gather behind a three deep police cordon and proceed to sing their victory songs while what I assume was the entire police force noth of Watford clear the Stoke fans.

That was all I saw, I went home.

In London village.
I went to the Spurs v. Arsenal derby last season which was a cracker (and which Spurs should have won).

For sheer naked intensity I'd suggest Rangers v. Celtic (My Grandmother used to tell me about the games she & my Grandfather went to in about 1919/20 and she could remember 70 years later), but I guess locals would also include Roma v. Lazio fascisti and various South American ones.

Christ, imagine finding yourself in the wrong end of the ground for that game. I reckon you'd actually be mushed into some sort of liquid form!!!

Edinburgh Derbies always used to have a reputation of being dour 0-0 affairs, however this year's New Year Derby was the best game I have ever been to. It was at Tynecastle. Hibs went 2-0 up having had two attacks in the first 20 mins or so. For the next hour we completely dominated the game and got it back to 2-2. We couldn't find the winner and Hibs came back into it in the last 10 mins of the game. With the game going into injury time they scored to make it 3-2. They then had a penalty almost immediately to make it 4-2. Three minutes into injury time we pulled one back through an 18 year old sub called Graeme Weir. Hibs only had to keep hold of the ball after kick-off to win the game but contived to lose control. We went up the park and young Weir scored again. Which was nice. Ref then blew his whistle 5 & a half mins into injury time. The game before that at Easter Road we were 1-0 down with 2 mins to go and won 2-1. The one before that we won 5-1 (2 goals in injury time). This season they scored in 2nd min of injury time to win 1-0.

All in all they're a lot better than they used to be. Been to three Old Firm derbies. They're overrated. If you want the most poisonous atmosphere then that's your game. The best thing about them is this idea propogated by the Glasgow media that it is the "greatest game on earth", like there are tribesmen in Borneo and peasants in Peru who are holding their breath waiting for the score from Ibrox or Parkhead.
