Think it depends on where in a decade you were born as to whether or not you see things in decade chunks. I was 12 when the 70s began and (obv) 22 when it ended. So the music of that decade is tied up with so much formative experience. And pretty bloody good it was too, everything from Bowie/Roxy through to Specials/Madness.

However, for sheer class and innovation, it has to be the 60s; Sgt Pepper, Blonde on Blonde, Pet Sounds, Are You Experienced, Revolver, Highway 61 Revisited, Astral Weeks, Let It Bleed all regularly find themselves in the top 10 albums of all time.

Am I the only person who feels the 60's were the best?

It would appear so...

You're not the only one. 60's by far, for me!

How can anyone hate the 90's? Grunge & indie at their peak. Along with some classic pop bands a la steps! .... 5,6,7,8. 2006-09 a brilliant few years, the best since the 1970s IMO, its a shame it doesn't really span the whole 00 decade.

Agree with the comment about growing up. Of course certain songs from periods of your life are gonna bring back great memories. Like I said, the mid to late 90's were amazing. Oasis, Blur, The Verve, Pulp and then COUNTLESS dance classics that are still played daily today, getting on to 15-20 years later such as Tony di Bart the real thing, stardust music sounds better with you, josh wink, ultra nate, the PRODIGY oh my how did I forget them, dj Belisima with Quicksilver, saint ettiene, Utah saints, Felix, underworld with born slippy, Grace it's not over yet, so so many!

**** knows. I enjoy music from the 60s onwards. All I know is that every year I can find something which excites me.

Pretty much this, although if I had to pick a decade, it has to be the 70s, probably because as a teenager grew up with t Rex and slade, followed by punk, new wave and ska,and of course Debbie Harry!

Each decade as had great music.

Apart from The Jam, by favouirite artists all come from the 60's, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Small Faces & The Kinks. So the 6o's edges it for me.

Through in Motown, Soul, Ska, & Psychedelia as well. What a decade.

a close call, but for the way that popular music changed so dramaticly in the decade - it has to be the 60s, starting with the fag end of rock'n'roll , ending with 'Prog rock' and reggae , the only decade when just by listening to a record a good guess can be made as to the year of release ...

followed by the 50s - as above but not so easily definable ...
then the 70s , advances become more 'stretched'

after digital stuff took over in the mid 80s it becomes impossible to guess , nothing seems to move forward ;(

The 70's produced Dr Feelgood so that's enough for my vote.

The absolute change in music....1956 onwards....Rock 'n' Roll hit the world...so many great hits since then....pop died for me after the 80s...still like lots of the opera classics and a lot of music till the girl groups....(Spice girls take note) started their wailing...

This, 60s every time - established the template for the next 50 years

Best time for music is always the present. You have what's around now plus a back catalogue of 50 years (I say 50 as if you go back another 10 you get to include the Rock and Roll years plus Cliff!)

Seconded. The reason I love Spotify is that I can listen on shuffle play and hear all sorts of good things. Listening now and Flanders and Swann was followed by Black Box Recorder then Show of Hands. There is still good stuff out there but I acknowledge that it is rare to hear anything totally unlike anything else - latest for me is Public Service Broadcasting who sample old public information recordings and broadcasts from the war to date!
