Something else to debate, besides the fallout from SC and Reading: the Guardian's list of the top 40 British bands (ill-named surely, some are solo artists)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/page/0,10607,1053415,00.html

An oldie like me is delighted to see Robert Wyatt on the list (pity there was no room for John Cale). Good to see Brighton's finest, British Sea Power, there as well.

Bunch of arse.

Totally irrelevant list. How could the Jam be missing from that list when a deadbeat Bowie and his false teeth by on it?

Its best british bands around today, if i'm not mistaken the jam split up a long time ago, therefore not in the list.

Probably because it says it is a list of 'practising' bands.

You are right, though, the Jam were the greatest British band ever. In the world, in fact...

Bowie is Bi-sexual which gives lefties a warm fuzzy feeling unlike the jam who com from woking(middle class), and were mods so therefor loads of union jack insignia which makes lefties feel ill.

Er, Massive Attack, Stereophonics, Portishead?

Interesting list but ultimately arty, NME-type bollocks. Girls Aloud my arse...

If you can have individuals then I nominate Attila - has there ever been a finer football song than "Roll Up For The Donkey Derby"?

Or Alabama 3, while I'm here.

31. Girls Aloud
The female winners of Pop Stars: The Rivals turned out to be tough cookies who, as promised, sent the boy winners packing with a combination of girl-gang iciness and 1960s-influenced pop. The first singles, Sound of the Underground and No Good Advice, were unsentimental and addictive, and the girls themselves opinionated in a way that belied their manufactured beginnings. British chart-pop once excelled at producing hits with lots of style and just enough substance to get by, and Girls Aloud are a return to these values.

I'm intrigued by the band at number 40 (whose name I'm not going to repeat on this board).

Are they having a laugh?
