I was reading this: http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2004/coolsongs/index.html

Don't agree with most of the choices though. However, considering today seems to be a day of musical debate on NSC (the Best Britsh Band post), I'm wondering what other NSC'ers think is the best segment of a song - either a bit that can stand alone from the rest of the track, or a great riff, or whatever.

Anyone who says the intro to Smells Like Teen Spirit will be taken out and shot, though.

So, so many to choose....

the beginings to Sweet Home Alabama, Back In Black, Baker Street, just come to mind.

The breaks. All day and All of the Night, Farm On The Freeway, Orange Crush.

Endings. Bohemian Rhasody, Under Pressure.

All tunes that make me smile.

I've got loads of favorites, but I think the best bit of a track, albeit one that could never be extracted and reused, is the modem handshake in Halcyon and On and On by Orbital

Oh for crying out loud! They've made the crappiest, poxiest bloke ever the number one! Bleeding Phil Collins!

And I seem to remember that despite the fact that he was supposed to be a drummer of sorts, these particular 'drums' were in fact a drum machine.

So kill that fat bastard and put the intro from the Only Ones' "Another Girl Another Planet" in there instead.

The very long drum solo on In a gada da vida by Iron Butterfly. They don't make 'em like that anymore

Wishbone Ash "Argus". The guitar (Gibson Flying V) is awesome.

Doctors of Madness. The electric violin solo (name of track escapes me). Anyone remember? Saw them at Top Rank Suite.

Oh yes.

And the intro to Tom Browne's "Funkin'for Jamaica" (although the rest of the song is crap.)

Marvin Gaye had a great line in intros - add the intro to "Got To Give It Up" to the list.

The bit at the beginning of the Stone Roses' Second Coming where the intro ends with a crescendo of reversed drums and the guitar kicks in.

The bit towards the end of Frank Zappa's Peaches En Regalia where the main tune comes back in but with chords as well as the melody line.

Current favourite 'bit' is on Rufus Wainwright's new album - in 'I Don't Know What It Is' where he sings "give me heaven or hell, Calais or Dover", there's an ascending crecendo riff type thing with strings and brass leading to a climax where Mr Wainwright starts wailing about "hoping the train was my big number" or something.

Genius.

THe guitar intro to Their law by the prodigy.
