Following on from the Hardest Groups thread, I thought I'd take Kalimantan Gull's suggestion of using the SPI data and see how the various teams performed.

The SPI calculated how each team would perform according to their ranking and the games they were playing. so I plotted these scores against the actual points tally to get a handle on how well each team had done.

As you can see, kudos to Japan and New Zealand who massively exceeded expectations and if you take out the two zeros, then Nigeria is the worst performer, just beating our old friends France and Italy. England came a less than impressive 23rd on the list.

(note the figures are projected score, actual score and percentage - if you score 100 or more, you met expectations)

The other thing worth noting is that England are the worst-performing team still left in the competition.
