F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is set to join Flavio Briatore in the consortium which is on the brink of taking control of Queen’s Park Rangers football club.

The Times newspaper reports on Thursday that the Briton, previously linked to a takeover of Arsenal, will acquire a majority stake in the financially troubled West London club as part of a group which includes Renault managing director Briatore.

Ecclestone had previously distanced himself from any involvement in the QPR bid and revealed that he would be interested in a buyout of Premier League club Arsenal next year.

However F1’s commercial rights holder now looks set to join Briatore’s consortium as a major shareholder.

The takeover is expected to be worth about £25 million, with the new owners set to repay the £10 million the struggling Championship club owes the ABC Corporation following a loan six years ago.

QPR narrowly staved off relegation from England’s second tier of football last season and under the new owners will took to recapture former glories of the late 1980s and early 1990s when it was an established top league side.
