Was just googling a few old names for the not so good ex albions thread and saw that Bernard Gallacher has sadly passed away at just age 45.
Feel a bit bad now at having googled him. RIP.
How very sad. Bernie was great value, a funny man.
R.I.P.
Graham Taylor has spoken of his immense pride in managing full-back Bernie Gallacher, who has died at the age of 44.
The Scottish defender was a member of the Villa side who bounced straight back to the top flight under Taylor's management in 1987-88.
And the former boss has fond memories of both Gallacher and Paul Birch, another unsung hero from that era, who died in February 2009.
"It's easy to talk about the big name players, the star names," said Taylor. "But every team that gain success have players like Paul Birch and Bernie Gallacher - and those players often don't get mentioned enough.
"It's just terrible to mention both of them in terms of passing away. Let's hope we now recognise what they did for the club. They were good lads."
Gallacher missed only one game as Villa stormed to promotion in Taylor's first season in charge.
"Bernie was a young lad who was probably only 20 then and he had made his debut in the final game of the previous season.
"He was a young boy at a club going downhill fast and therefore it was very difficult for him and the other lads.
"But he was reliable, wanted to do well and was never going to cause any trouble. He was a manager's dream. He was never going to be a problem. He wanted to do his best and he wasn't going to cause me any problems on or off the pitch. There were other characters around at the time who did that!
"I remember him most from the time when we were promoted. He was a quiet lad but there was reliability about him, especially that season.
"There are a number of players who don't get recognised in football and Bernie was one of those. He would come out and give us a seven out of ten performance every week. There were very rarely any three out of ten performances.
"If he'd had more confidence and belief in himself we might have seen some nine out of ten performances.
"He was a good, good lad. It is tragic that he has died so young. For anyone to pass away in their 40s, it is shocking.
"Birchy was more of a lively character but like Bernie he was reliable. When we went out on the pitch he gave a standard of performance that he very rarely dropped below. I am immensely proud to have managed both of them."
Our condolences go out to Bernie's family at this sad time.
