Just read in the local paper that out of a city population of 186,000 over 48,000 survive on benefit hand-outs in the city of Stoke-on-Trent ! This put Stoke 12th in the league table of the 'benefit culture' just who the other cities/towns are in anyones guess reckon Liverpool will be near the top ? :bigwave:

Does that include child benefit? Child tax credit? Working tax credit? Disability allowance? Unemployment benefit? Probably quite a few on here claiming one or more of those.

I've got as much contempt as anyone for those who won't lift a finger to help themselves, not least when they end up having a lot more disposable income than those who are genuinely trying to earn some money. Maybe Stoke is a hotbed for those people.

But, especially at the moment, more and more people are coming onto the benefits radar in one way or another.

ROCHDALE has been dubbed ‘the scrounge capital of the UK’ after it was revealed that the Falinge area has the highest concentration of benefit claimants in the country.

New figures have revealed that 820 out of 1,074 working-age adults in Falinge and College Bank are unemployed and claiming out-of-work benefits.

This works out at 76.4 per cent of the population and means that the Falinge and Central Rochdale ward tops the national league table.

At least those on JSA and low/middle DLA will have to put something back into society in the near future or have their benefit stopped. Will HB&B be given a choice of litter picking , painting fences or tidying up OAPs gardens ?

DLA is a benefit that can be claimed regardless of whether someone is working or not and not dependent on financial status. It's got nothing to do with not working, it's there as additional help to cover the costs for equipment and care related with being disabled. I can't see how they can threaten to stop it if someone isn't working when for many middle raters (eg people who are deaf, blind or need help with basic bodily functions and personal care) find it exceedingly difficult to find work. And are disabled parents supposed to find work or get their support stopped, because that is ridiculously impractical and could lead to an increase in poverty amongst the most vulnerable.

Where did you find out this information? I can understand if people currently on Incapacity Benefit are being reviewed and encouraged into work through the new ESA to stop the persistant avoidance of employment by the long term sick.
