Arguably the European Champions don't have a specialist player that plays that role, or at least they didn't with Oxlade-Chamberlain injured for much of this season. That's because there are lots of different ways to win football matches - in fact the idea of a number 10 is tactically quite outdated at this stage. Of all of the players you've mentioned, only one is a proper central midfielder (Doucoure) and only one plays regularly as a number 10 (Maddison). O'Neil played out wide, JWP had his effective period this season from the right of midfield, Felipe Anderson is usually an inside forward from the left, and Pereyra is versatile but has played wide for Watford most of this season.

So whilst I totally agree we need more pace and creativity, it's still debatable how much of an impact any of those players would've had on a CH Brighton side considering the respective roles they would've likely played.

Under Chris, they would have played auxiliary FB or DCM... formation 9-0-0-0-0-1...

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

I’m not hung on their job title or exact positioning.

Like you, in my own eyes I witnessed Maddison, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong, Doucoure, Pereyra and O’Neil in CM put the likes of Propper and Gross to shame.

Attacking - speed of thought, instinctively creative, pace and perhaps most importantly always thinking forward, always passing forward.

Defence - they have pace to match CM opponents so they can get back and assist the DM sitter when their team lose the ball. This was so apparent in all those home defeats against so called fellow relegation rivals. Propper and/or Gross were left floundering upfield, their feet stuck in treacle, as the aforementioned CM’ers, plus those of Cardiff and Bmuff destroyed them with pace on the counter.

I’m very positive about the appointment of Graham Potter and optimistic that the ever growing recruitment team will sort out our ACM.

Even if we don't spend a penny in the transfer window this summer, TB would have far less than "half of this season’s £135m club income" left over. Our total staff costs alone in 2017-18 were 78 million, and they would have been decidedly higher last season.

On top of that the accounts take the hit of the amortised player registrations from spending in previous windows.

Already for 2019-20 there isn't a great deal of that "£135m club income" that isn't already spent.

Uncle Tony hasn’t let us down, already spending in fees alone:

Maupay £20m
Webster £20m
Trossard £15m
Clarke £3.9m

Less the initial proceeds on AK.

Plus hopefully more players to come in this week.

I'm not sure we can really count Clarke yet, given he's currently running around the John Smith's stadium in a Derby shirt...

All lower league players.

Are they any good, or have we bought a series of more expensive Mackail-Smith's?

Great bounce. Trossard is a GEM and the other two are proven Championship players looking for the next move up, which is what a lot of people have been demanding. If we turn March in to a LWB and reinvigorate Locadia this will have been our most decent summer window for ages.

Very true. I was just conveying the money spent, after we were told we were pot-less this summer (unless we sold Dunk).

Good series of posts ...we are where we are...and personally for me its not all about the signings but the apparent change in formation and ‘outlook’ .....tad more hope than i had a few weeks back and a lot more anticipation for the season ahead

I read today he was our sixth signing of the summer. Other than the two defenders, this lad and Trossard, who were the other 2?

Richards from city.
We are bound to have signed another keeper too as we were down to our last 5
