I never normally think this, but how much better were ITV's commentary & summarising team yesterday than the BBC team we've seen so far?

I watched the Portugal game on Saturday, and half time was so bad, it was embarrassing. Hansen is always smug and talks over everyone until they shut up and listen to him. Ian Wright talked complete crap and kept being over familiar with the others, not to mention being dressed like he was heading for the pub. And why the hell has Peter Schmeichel EVER got a TV job? He's just appalling, sits on the fence the whole time and never, ever criticises goalkeepers, no matter how badly they f**k up.

"So Peter....the keeper should perhaps have done better than let that pea-roller through his legs in the first minute then?"

"well, no, I don't think so, what you have to understand is that the ball was moving a lot faster than it looks, plus it's the new ball with a particularly difficult shiny surface, which makes it swerve loads and means it's more difficult to catch, and then there's the notorious Faro evening breeze, which made the ball move in the air. And of course the right back should have cleared the ball, so, no, I don't think it's the keeper's fault".

Gordon Strachan and Peter Reid would have been a considerable improvement in the games they did, only they could barely get a word in edgeways because of Hansen, Lawrenson and Wright talking over them the whole time.

They are starting to make Andy Townsend on ITV look GOOD.

Still not convinced by ITV, I reckon it could be a lucky start.

Just look at what ITV did with THe Premiership etc. They have a habit of dumbing down football, and certainly had some quite naff stuff pre kick off. I only hope there slight improvement lasts.

Still prefer BBC coverage. Pity they don't have Gavin Peacock on the TV rather than 5Live. He is class. Gordon Strachan looks the part too.

Much as I like Bobby Robson, he isn't expert summariser material. Clive Tyldesley had to nudge him every so often to remind him to talk. I also can't bear Clive as a commentator and was particularly horrified when he was saying England had won the game with 5 minutes to go.

ITV are SHITE - their commentators are worse than a team of gibbons with a microphone, at least the Tyldseley/Atkinson Man U love-in has been broken up, Robson was a little better, but Tyldesely is a class A twat.

I know they're a commercial station, but FFS, the instant the final whistle has gone, and you want to see some sort of reaction - ITV go straight to adverts, then come back for 1 minute, then go to adverts, then come back, and ... have an advert for another ITV show ... utterly unprofessional, even Des can't redeem them, it's like making Henry play for Palace

I don’t like ITV. I think the BBC is much better.

What is particularly amusing is the way the commentators and presenters at the big tournaments turn it on for the pub crowd. Des has always done it, and Tyldesely got in on the act last night.

I look forward to see how the BBC flirt with the pub punters on Thursday...

Agreed, Gavin Peacock is superb, but they've probably decided he isn't a big enough name for the magnitude of the event. Stupid, as he's one of the best around.

Funnily enough, I always thought Stan Collymore was always very good on 5Live, but I guess he's still keeping a low profile...

Hear hear. itv should not be allowed anywhere near football coverage. They are embarrassingly bad. For Christs sake whatever you think of Bobby Robson you could never call him articulate. To have him as a co-commentator is a joke. As for Tylsdesley he's just a xenophobic prick. He suits itv down to the ground. The BBC are not great but they are so much better than itv. And their trailers are just pure class.

Clive Tydlesly is and always has been utter shite

It was like he had a list of things to say last night for each situation. When we were winning 'the French players will be greeted around every dugout in the country with 1-0 to England' and then at the end when Zidane dispatched the pen "C'est la vie"

Twat

Agreed. Had to smile at the ITV trailer lampooning the BBC one. They never actually have any decent ideas of their own - they even had to steal Fantasy Football and turn it into utter dross

Its comments from Gary Linekar, like "The Swiss never got out of Neutral... So no change there then" that will always endear me to the BBC.

Also, whats with the slanty scoreline that ITV uses? Is that supposed to be trendy, modern, retro or something? It is none of them, it is wanky.

How much it Gary Lineker trying to be Des Lynam these days?

I forget what it was he said last night, but it was in exactly the same style (though without the same class) as Des's famous
"shouldn't you be at work?" moment from the 1998 world cup opener.

Don't mind Lineker, but he'll never be Des.

I still think ITV are rubbish, I just thought the BBC were starting to catch them up for overall crapness.

Fantasy Football isn't what it used to be either is it...

Bobby Robson is going senile IMHO.

How often did Clive Tyledesley have to cut across his wittering because in the time that it had taken him to make the same not very interesting point three times, the other team had taken it up the pitch and were about to score!

It was embarrasing. Like having your Gran round to watch the match.

I thought he was half asleep most of the time. It was as though CT had to rouse him every so often to remind him of why he was there.

Why didn't they have him in the studio and Andy Townsend as the expert summariser? That would have made more sense

A couple of beauties from the ITV commentary team last night;

"Leslie King", Bobby Robson's take on Ledley Kings name.

"And Arsenal are going to make a substitution", Clive gets his French teams a little mixed up.

"King is a very apt name because he is like a King..pin", Sir Bobby comes up with a superb comment.

Clive's OTT bombast really began to grate in the second half. How much bollocks can one man speak? All delivered in that almost Jonathan Pearce voice. "We held out the French for 100 years, can we hold out for 45 minutes?" (That's my Clive impression)

BBC get top marks for employing Gordon Strachan who managed to make Peter Reid look like the CHIMP he is. At half-time in the Switzerland vs Croatia game Reidy looked totally lost as Strachan and Hansen came up with a series of intelligent sounding tactical ideas. At one point Strachan was busy describing how to defend against indirect free-kicks into the penalty box and Reid just stared at him in amazement. All he could do was try and fend off the jibes aimed at him over his purchase of Bernt Haas for Sunderland.

Where's Robbie Earl when you need him.

My favouriye Tyldsley moment last night.

"he's a German dentist, so you don't want to get him angry........"

and what was that bizarre comment when they showed Santini standing by the dug out. "My what big eyes you'vr got"

What was all that about?

I also made the huge mistake of wathcing the Beebs coverage last last night. Ray Stubbs looked just like his wife had just admiited her lover for another woman to himr, Ian Wright was simply incomprehensible and Jamie Redknapp made even less sense that hos old man. and Garth Crooks asking questions that were so long that Beckham had to be woken up to give a reply.

And as for John Motoson's hysterical commentary

I have to say, Des Lynam seems back to form and was the best presenter overall so far. He seems to love the big games.

Ian Wright is just an annoying joke. He should not be allowed anywhere near the studio. Lawrenson gets on my nerves. I like Hansen.

As for ITV, Andy Townsend is a bore.

That did puzzle me. I can only assume it was some intellectual reference that went over my head. Then again, this is ITV ... sack him!
