Sad day in the world of football commentators - one of the better ones hanged up his football mike today.

I'll always remember Mexico '86 when we beat Poland 3 - 0 but before we scored they came close and in exasperation he said:

"If England carry on with this crass defending they will not go through" :clap2: :clap2:

Is he carrying on with the ice dancing though.....??!! :lolol:

Seriously, thanks Barry.

Isn't he the one who did "Look at his face, just look at his face!!!", with the 2nd "his" sounding like a 13-year-old whose voice has just broken...?!

kevin keegan and arsene wenger (legend) gave him a bottle of champagne and a signed man city shirt lovely touch for a such a great commentator.

He will be sorely missed. He was so good at capturing the mood of games with some interesting comments, rarely the cliche.

Never understood his pronunciation of Ole Gunnar Solshyara though!

His voice was always the soundtrack to contentment. 10.30 on a Saturday night, full stomach, no need to get up in the morning, footy on the telly, all is well with the world.

He was part of a style of commentating which is now pretty much extinct. Arlott, Laker and Benaud in cricket, Maskell in tennis.
All very individual, all about adding to an atmosphere and not just stating the obvious.

Strange time in the season to go!

I wonder why he didn't wait until the end of the season?

I agree that he was one of our better commentators.

He is going now as he has thrown teddies out of the pram at not getting the more high profile games anymore. Thanks for your efforts Barry, but thank God you are calling it a day, as personally I never rated you anyway!

Found Barry Davies a bit too precious in some of his recent commentaries - but will always cherish his words as transcribed in my signature. . . :clap2:

Lee...Interesting...Very interesting!!
Oh! Look at his face! Just LOOK at his face!!!

I also like his reaction to Maradonna's second goal in 1986.

He's got Burruchaga to his left and Valdano to his right but he won't need any of them!
Ohh! You have to say that is magnificent. You have to say that is magnificent! There can be no debate about that one. That was sheer, delightful football!
