Albion suffered more Hillsborough misery as they went down 3-1 to Sheffield Wednesday today.
The Seagulls have never won at the famous South Yorkshire venue and were unable to change that against a robust and effective Owls outfit.
They had Ashley Barnes sent off at 1-0 down and coach Charlie Oatway sent to the stand after a second-half altercation which also led to home boss Dave Jones being similarly punished.
Albion and their debutant defender Matthew Upson could not have got to a much worse start.
Leroy Lita, on his first start for the Owls, got away from Upson to head home Michail Antonio’s cross in only the fifth minute.
Leo Ulloa would have marked his Championship debut with a quick equaliser had Chris Kirkland not got down to quickly to keep out his well-controlled volley in the bottom corner.
But the afternoon really turned against the Seagulls in the 32nd minute when Barnes was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Kieran Lee near the Albion byline.
Once the arguments had subsided and Barnes departed, Danny Pugh thumped the free-kick low across goal and saw it miss everybody to find a way just inside the far post.
Craig Mackail-Smith, introduced at half-time, livened things up for the Seagulls and his good run led to Andrea Orlandi thumping home a shot on 54 minutes.
But Antonio restored the two-goal difference two minutes later by bundling home after a corner.
Jones and Oatway were sent to the stand following a fracas near the dugouts after Pugh was shown a yellow card which the visitors felt should have been red for a foul on Inigo Calderon.
