I actually think the team that got relegated from the Championship under Coppell is the best team I have seen. We finished the season in play off form and only went down due to Hinshelwoods run of 8 consecutive defeats.

.

I'd have to disagree. Coppell had us out of the relegation zone quite a few weeks before the end of the season, only for us to drop back in again and finish the season relegated. Hardly play off form.

The Argus ran a table from when he took over, which I believe was November and we were 7th from memory. We did chuck some points away I remember us losing at home to Preston and also Wimbledon in their original guise. But that shouldn't undermine the fact we picked up many excellent victories. Derby, Wolves, Forest & Watford at home spring to mind plus some excellent victories on our travels.

We had a similar thread on this a few months back.

I'd expect the current line-up to win but don't underestimate the ability of the back to back team to win when they really shouldn't have. IMO they overachieved going up the second time (but what fun it was!) whereas the current crop should be far more comfortable at the next level.

There's no doubt in my mind that the current team are better, playing better football.

But would they win? The back to backs biggest strength (other than BZ) was its team spirit which enabled it to win the important games. They never gave up and were very tough mentally. Arguably both Chesterfield (despite their cheating) and Reading were better teams but we won both divisions by fighting hard and sometimes grinding out results.

If the two teams played each other now I think there would be a 50/50 chance of the back to backs winning 1 -0 or the current team winning by 2 or 3 clear goals.

Firstly, the back-to-back team would have Mayo at left back and Oatway in for Steele.

Oatway and Carpenter would mess our midfield up. I'd back Cullip against Murray. Zamora would find it tough against our defence - but he is Zamora - and judging by the Stoke game, a Watson set piece on to Zamora's head would be the difference. 1-0 to the back-to-back team.

One other point - then we were challenging with Stoke, Reading, Cardiff and Bristol City for the title - all good teams who were very much on the up. This year the opposition are shite - big teams at low points in their history or coming off relegation. There's no competition.

I dont think the opposition is shite this year at all. I think there are a lot of evenly matched teams in this division, that does not mean its shite. The fact that we are the best by some distance is something we should embrace, not belittle by slagging off what we are up against.

This side would win quite comfy I think. The current side I belive would be mid table if in championship right now, with the team as it is. Untill Coppell came in and bought in 5/6 players we were rock bottom. Yes I know Zamora was injured at the start of the season but even so. That team was so dependant on Zamora's goals. There was plenty of 1-0 wins under Taylor on the way to the title. I think the current side could just about cope with loseing any one player, that side clearly could not, at championship level.

I would agree, Division 2 has got a lot better in the last 5-10 years.

quite balanced, the old BtoB team kept the ball well enough and would out muscle the current side too (Murray would be on his arse alot courtesy of Cullip), so it depends on the weather. if a cold, damp winter evening then Brooker's enthusiasm wouldnt turn up, giving the TT the edge. on a warm Saturday afternoon in late Summer/Spring, the presence of Zamora would edge it for BtoB.

6-5 BTB side. However as Cloughie used to say football isn't played on paper.

I just feel the BTB had a bit more mental toughness about them, and would of turned the game into a scrap to disrupt the current side. Oatway, Cullip & Chippy weren't afraid to put in the odd reckless challenge to make a point. Close game but 1-0 to the old team with a flash of brilliance from Zamora.

Its all conjecture, but there's no denying that Stoke, Reading, Cardiff and Bristol City were strong sides on the way up at the time. This year we have Charlton and Wednesday, big names but struggling on the field, a good Saints side I'll give you, Peterborough fresh off a relegation and Bournemouth, a small team competing strongly. And all FIVE of those sides have changed their manager this season. Plus Huddersfield, who are decent enough. But I'm firm that the opposition was harder then than now.

We'd lost our manager and appointed someone very inexperienced, not a fair comparison. Coppell proved that our team was good enough to compete.

Coppell bought in Beasant, Blackwell, Ingarmarrson, Sidwell, Rodger, Rougeir and others...We are comparing the btb team and the team of today. The btb team without Zamora or even with Zamora were not good enough for the championship. Where as the current side would stay up with ease.
