The cam belt has just gone in my Rover. Got it towed to a local garage by the AA, and will have the guy look at it in the morning, but I'm staring down the barrell of hundreds & hundreds of £££'s to get it sorted.

Christ knows when it will be back on the road, but my trip to Colchester now looks to be under serious threat. It would appear there could be a spare ticket going soon. Don't suppose anyone would give me £500 for it ?

Are Rovers that expensive to repair ?

Or perhaps my total non-mechanical mind does not realise the seriousness of a cam belt ?

The cam belt went in our Sierra a few years back and completely fecked up the engine.

Its usually 50/50 whether it seriously affects the car or not. Ours suffered badly.

My faint, lingering hope is that it was the "quick" analysis of the AA guy. I'm hoping it hasn't totally f***ed my engine, cos there was no loud bang, or unpleasant grinding noises at all. I just lost all power to the engine - it was still actually running and ticking over normally (by the sound), but when I pressed the accelerator, nothing was happening, no revs at all, so I drifted to a hault and switched off.

Maybe the belts gone, but without causing SERIOUS damage - that is my one hope. Absolute pain in the arse all round though, and I can ill afford the expense.

Big thumbs-up to the AA though. They turned up within 15 minutes of my call (after a text confirming they were on their way), towed me to a garage, and gave me a lift home. Excellent service.

Is that the thing where a passing lady removes her stocking and that seems to do the trick?

I've got some spare Pretty Polly's that I could send you - £1 for an unopened packet, £2 if you want used ones!

Just had a car nightmare on holiday with my er, ….Rover. Put the car on the train at Calais, next morning at Nice it was pushed off – oh dear. Clutch completely knackered! 100 degress in Nice, hungry family wanting to get to campsite 30 miles away and no car. Luckily the AA five star service step in and pay towing, and laboutr, but still shell out £270 for replacement clutch. Also AA arrange FREE hire car for a week, but what with wanting to get to the campsite (nearly 36 hours after leaving home I didn’t a) check the car properly b) pay the extra 10 euros a day to limit the excess on the insurance to 200 euros. Two bad mistakes to make as we later discover that an attempt had been made to break in to the car (either before we got it, or when we parked it by the beach). Damage came to £430! Seven hundred bloody quid on cars – grrrr!.

Also whenever we service the car they tell me that the cam belt should be replace soon, and I keep saying we’ll do it next time (costs about £250 to do). Having read comments here I think I’ll get it done before it goes now!

Lush – that’s the fan belt I believe!

What size is the engine ??, the longer the
stroke the less likely ya pistons kissing a valve, if it sounded after it went, you may be just looking at a new belt, but be carefull, this is the average garage chance to really sting be very carefull !!

Whats the engine capacity on your Rover? If it's 2 litre or more you might get away with it as there should be enough room. Under that and you could be in trouble.

Most unreliable car i ever had was a G reg Fiat Uno Turbo, every bloody month something went on it, Water pump, Fuel pump, Ignition module, Before that i had an Old Maestro and although very uninspring it last me 50,000 miles got rid of it at 116,000 and it never gave me any hassle, not once did it let me down.

Then i had a brand new Saxo VTS, never gave me any problems only thing that did go was my own fault i'd had it lowered and it wore through the Power steering pipe, got that sorted under warranty although technically shouldn'y have been covered but great service from Citroen on that.

Currently got a Fiat Punto, no probs with that either.

Its a 1.6 gsi.
I've taken it to the fella who does the MOT's on it, and he's going to have a look at it tomorrow. Been going there for years, he seems trustworthy. I've not been stitched up yet for anything major (the most I've ever paid via an MOT there was £90 for some odds & sods, and thats on a car nearly 10 years old).

To be honest, I'll be delighted to get away with £350 for this, but I fear it could be much worse.

:(
