Huddersfield

Huddersfield in second have 10 games left so a potential maximum of a further 30 points.

To get the average 85 points for second, they would need a further 22 points. This would involve seven wins, one draw and two defeats from their last ten games.

To get the average 93 points to win the league, they would need a further 30 points from the last ten games, i.e. to win all of them!!

Peterborough

Peterborough in third have 11 games left so a potential maximum of a further 33 points.

To get the average 85 points for second, they would need a further 23 points. This would involve seven wins, two draws and two defeats from their last eleven games.

To get the average 93 points to win the league, they would need a further 31 points from the last eleven games, i.e. to win ten, draw one and not lose any!!

Saints

Saints in fourth have 12 games left so a potential maximum of a further 36 points.

To get the average 85 points for second, they would need a further 24 points. This would involve eight wins and four defeats from their last twelve games.

To get the average 93 points to win the league, they would need a further 32 points from the last twelve games, i.e. to win ten, draw two and not lose any!!

Bournemouth

Bournemouth in fifth have 10 games left so a potential maximum of a further 30 points.

To get the average 85 points for second, they would need a further 24 points. This would involve eight wins and two defeats from their last ten games.

To get the average 93 points to win the league, they would need a further 32 points from the last ten games, which would be a virtually impossible task.

ok children let me explain :p
we do not need to finish above 2nd as we will be the 2nd place team, we are already in the top two!
if 2nd place finished on 88 and third place finished on 80, you do not need the 88 points, you need 81, the other 7 are luxary points.
for example: when hull finished 2nd with 86, tranmere got 79 in third place, if we were told now that third place were going to get 79 points, we would only need 80...understand???
so this is why i did third place so we could add a point and know what we may need to get in the top two.
i can see how you got confused but you have made something simple seem confusing when it isn't!

Your argument is flawed because you are forgetting first place.

1st >88pts
2nd =88pts
3rd 80pts

becoming

1st>88pts
2nd =88pts
3rd us81pts
4th 80pts

Because of the nature of football tables, getting one point more than position below the one you're aiming for isn't always enough to guarantee you the position you want. You need to beat/reach the total of the position you want to take. In this case second.

The argument that "the top two teams can have as low as one point more than the third place, which on average is y points" is a different argument to "get more points than third place automatically makes us second place" (and kinda redundant as the argument is essentially "stay in the top two and we're promoted")

If every team currently in the top six (apart from the Albion) got 2 points per game for the rest of the season, 83 points would be enough to get promoted.
Update after yesterday ... If every team currently in the top six (apart from the Albion) got 2 points per game for the rest of the season, 85 points would be enough to get promoted.

The uplift in the target is what happens when Peterborough, Southampton and Huddersfield get three points. But they won't all keep that up for the rest of the season.
