Another nail in the coffin for the pub industry.

Beer will probably go up at least 10p, by the time extra duty plus vat are added, then an increase due to duty rise in fuel for delivery.

Landlords always round up to the nearest 5p nowadays.

It's got to bloody good beer these days to get me into a pub at the prices.

The Big Society obviously does not include the Local - fairly typical of the ConDem twats.

Would the alternatives have done it any different?

Depends on who you regard as the alternatives. I am not a fan of any of the major parties but the current Government have already put up VAT and delivered cuts in living standards for most people. This just adds to the attack on ordinary people.

To be fair, VAT was going up regardless of who won the last election. Sadly, the perilous state of the global economy is the real reason that everything is like it is, no one knows how to deal with it, left, right, or whatever, the USA has a left of centre government and they have horrendous problems too, it's the same all over Europe too, one way or another, we all have to pay for what has gone on under previous administrations, whether Labour here or Republican in the USA, or even the administrations before then. It always sounds like one party is doing it wrong, when there are no right ways, and no one would be making it any easier for us right now.

Except that ordinary people have has tax rises, cuts in services, frozen wages and the wealthy and transnationals corporations are getting tax cuts. We'd all be driven to drink if we could afford it.

Yup, that seems to be the long and short of it sadly, although I thought they had increased the personal allowance to over 9k? So it's not all increase for everyone is it? It's all dog shit at the end of the day, I remember paying 32p in the pound tax when I left school, nowadays you'll pay a lot less there, but other things seem to cost a lot more. Perhaps we should go back to everyone paying a third of their salary in income tax, and lose it off essentials like fuel, food VAT etc.

unfortunately drinkers will be hit the same as smokers soon. when the minimum pricing starts that will be the first step to make it to expensive for the working man to drink, this will be followed by bans on advertising and then tobacco style health warnings on bottles to start the denormalisation of people who enjoy a drink. every day after work i used to go for a pint and a smoke to relax, since the smoking ban i only go to the pub once a month and the rest of the time we buy beer from the supermarket and smoke and drink in my house.

sadly the days of freedom and enjoyment for many people will be taxed out of existance and its 'all for our own good' according to the nanny state and health freaks.:nono:

Looks to be going the same way as Sweden/Norway etc where 'BAD' things such as alcohol and ciggies are prohibitively expensive for most.

But then in those countries the government subsidises gym membership so LA fitness etc is about £2 a month.

Moves towards a healthier nation, With less smoking aswell (And I'm a smoker) the UK government can save some of the one hundred and fifty eight BILLION pound spent annually on smoking related illness, That is included in the five billion it is estimated smoking costs the UK economy a year.

That'd pay alot of debt off I'd think. We still wouldn't get our gyms though.

Not to mention the persecution of disabled people.
