I think it is important to have the true turn up data to avoid a false representation of the figures.

The club would have that data. The attendance given as the number of tickets sold ensures HMRC doesn't plan a dawn raid after a tip off. I've been to games in the past where the away support has been given as XXX when its been more like XXXX and photos in the local press alongside the match report suggest likewise.

If palace disclosed "through the gate" instead of sold tickets for say Bristol City at home in the Championship then empty seats at Selhurst would have outnumbered taken seats by over 3 to 1 as your disclosed tickets sold gate was what 11,000 and in the ground what? 9000? Palace and every club disclose tickets sold not in attendance, why should Brighton be any different? As for apathy, well as someone else pointed out, when Palace can point to average gates of over 25000 in any division other than the top flight? 30 years a go when you used to have a decent support to match ours? Straw clutching at its best.

No, no it doesn't.

HMRC dealings have absolutely nothing to do with this at all.

We're not living in the 1970s where most of the club's takings is cash being handed across at the turnstiles.

Stating tickets sold rather than bums on seats has become the de facto measure for a number of years and the Albion have fallen in line with that. I do personally think it's a shame that this has happened across football as a whole, but I'm a bit of a traditionalist, I guess.

I think it's also fair to say that the Albion will have more stay aways than most, on average, but it's a simple matter of fact that season ticket holders are less likely to turn up than those who buy a ticket for a specific match, and we are blessed with a lot more season ticket holders than most other clubs.

I agree except I dont think Brighton have more than most well supported clubs who have large season ticket fan base. I don't know the figures but i would guess that the large London clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea have more no shows in their season ticket base than us. Reason is that they sell more tickets to companies than I imagine the Albion do. For those seats to be filled, then someone at the company will have to want to spend an afternoon or evening with a client. Even big games there will be empty seats for that reason. Clubs like Brighton don't have the same amount of corporate sales.

Agreed. My comparison was meant more with our current peers in the Championship.

Spookily, I put in a Freedom of Information Act request to Sussex Police earlier this week to obtain this information. Will publish details when (or if???!) they get back to me.

Se20 - when was the last time Palace had a crowd approaching 26k in the Championship? I just had a quick look and went back to 2004, but nothing (I had got bored by that point). Is this due to apathy amongst the Palace fanbase, or have thousands of supporters been on holiday for ten years?

Genuine lol.

It used to be widely suspected that attendances were under-reported to allow cash to be taken without being declared to HMRC. Whilst we don't have cash on the door at all any more, I would expect HMRC do keep an eye on clubs that do and so encourage official attendances, as published in the paper and so on, to reflect tickets sold rather than people there.

Bozza normally knows more than me though.

Would we want the club to release two figures? Presumably they have them. Could be confusing.

Superphil- when do you take the photo? I will wave next time.

Why don't they simply work the true figures out by only counting all tickets that are activated going through the gate ?
Surely this must be a legal requirement due to fire and safety law.
But they definitely don't do that.

Why should Brighton attendances be on who turns up as against everyone else who disclose tickets sold?

I'd imagine they do actually do that, as well. They just don't announce it.

I'm pretty sure they'd need to record both figures - tickets sold for financial records (and the official announcement), actual bodies in for both bureaucratic legal reasons, stock control reasons, and to monitor actual attendances to try to work out how to improve numbers through the door to help pie sales etc.

Sadly the police say they do not have this information, will see if it can be sourced elsewhere
