Atmosphere at away games..?

Having not been to a home game since 2002, I am making do with the away games local to me, which this season have been; Scunthorpe, Bradford (cracking game), Huddersfield and Doncaster..
I find it bizarre how different the atmosphere at each can be with no real worthy explanation.

For example, the atmosphere at Huddersfield was brilliant, despite the overcast weather and our middling league position, we were noisy, singing and having a fantastic time.

But on the terraces behind the goal at Doncaster in about the same league position, I don't think I heard a single chant of any note, and we were defeated with a whimper. Coincidence? Possibly not.

I think the Albion, as with many of the lower league clubs are very much a confidence team. We sing and show our support and the players look visibly more confident? We sing, we win!

In my opinion, at the Huddersfield and Bradford games there were about three people starting the singing and getting everyone else going. At the Doncaster (and I think Scunthorpe) games they weren't there. Therefore no singing at all.

What do you think?

Hudders was arguably our best performance of the season and donny ceretainly was not. I think its more the case of the players giving us a performance that triggers the atmosphere rather than the other way around.
Having said that I ve been to away games where we've been awful but still sang all the way through (wolves away last season)

I think there is truth in both theories.

Despite what you might imagine, all the usual suspects [Krispies, etc] were at Donny, but it just didn't happen that day. There was some chanting [mostly aimed at Neil Sullivan] but the team never turned up, and the lack of a roof doesn't help either.

Wolves last year was a good laugh. Especially the Mexican wave as the football was so boring. What did we manage? 4 laps before someone cheered for something happening on the pitch?

Wolves last year was where a steward got hit on the head with a lump of Dutch cheese.

Are you sure it was Dutch cheese? I had an incling that it was a semi-mature camembert?

I wasn't at Donny but I find a roof always helps - remember Forest about 5 years ago - one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced - we lost, but sang our hearts out and helped claw back two goals. Shame they got 3 but what a night.

We were noisy at Doncaster. Their keeper got a rousing chorus of 'Beckham from the half way line' and lots of chants about McCammon (until he scored)

i think it all depends on what there ground is like (ie. a roof) and if the singers are all in one group or dotted around the stand

Doncaster was quiet because only about 20 people sang.

Millwall is surely the best example of a ground with good acoustics

I had to pay over the odds though and it wasn't worth it.

Northampton had a good atmosphere, though our main singing came from opposite ends of the L (those who were there will know what I mean), the best bits were the east/west side song and the ironic gay chants. The only strange thing on that day was how quiet their fans were, we barely heard a whimper from them, those sat in the stand just to my right looked at us as if we were strange...to be singing that is.
