I think the thread title should be extended to say: "....according to a Daily Mail journalist." We've no idea if this is true.

It's a worrying dilemma, but if we are still playing proper football and promotion candidates next season, then has Gus taken us as far as he can ? Even looking at what we now have, i do think premier/championship bouncing is the most we could expect.

But i do think that when Gus goes, he will go to a significant foreign team for 4-5 years before coming back for a team from the top 6.

I don't even believe the date in the daily fail. We all need to have some faith in the management. They have said they want to be around for years and they have done nothing yet to contradict themselves. SO the daily fail can crawl back into the cretinous hole it emerged from. What a waste of paper

A mildly alarming revelation, that.

My money would be it ended on a "don't even bother" from Gus. I genuinely believe he is a man with a mission, a project at the Albion, and he is not going to ditch that lightly. I think he has a Martinez-type loyalty in him, a sense that he's started something he hasn't yet finished.

I know LOYALTY is such a rare commodity in this game, and perhaps I am being hopelessly naive, but I really do feel we have that with Gus. I would be utterly crushed like never before if he disproved that, but I don't think he will.

Spot on Easy 10, spot on.....

I think Hughe will get it eventually. Find the Poyet comment ridiculous. I just don't think he would consider it.

I have to agree with the sentiments above. Easy I agree it is a concern, but I remain confident that much like martinez, gus believes he is unfinished here and has probably sat down done the good old 'pro's and cons' on a piece of paper and it has showed him that staying with a club that has no debt, full managerial control, little press intrusion (allows him to make a mistake or two as he learns managment) and a squad he has molded in his vision.

There is obviously a very attractive pull towards a club like villa but I honestly believe that gus and tony sing of the same song sheet and know there is a very real posibility that we could be challenging for playoffs next season. So the question I think gus has answered is 'stick with a club that can play my football or start again'. The answer is stick.

When you say no debt you do realise that we weren't given that 90million pound stadium?

Martinez was even offered double salary to go to villa, he even turned that down. Any manager, good manager must know villa needs to be rebuilt again as they are no where near the side they were when martin o'neil was manager...Houllier came along and turned them into relegation candidates, and in desperation signed Robert Pires!!! lol the biggest mistake was losing o'neil always near the top and pushing for europe....now pffft....rubbish, swallow your ego villa and beg o'neil to come back.

No, he didn't.

Didn't even bother going for the interview. He wasn't interested - I think thats fairly heroic, and certainly refreshing. I always thought well of him beforehand, but that just raised my opinion of him further. And I have an inkling that Gus is made of the same stuff.

Fair enough, I've had a busy week and haven't been following this that closely - I heard he had been given permission to talk to them then a couple of days later turned them down, and I assumed that he'd spoken to them in that time. My mistake. I still think it was only half-hearted though.

the consensus seemed to be that the whole Martinez thing was a smokescreen, as they did indeed tap up Hughes and he will become their manager
I assumed Hughes had been tapped up when he left Fulham, and I've seen nothing to suggest that wasn't the case.
EDIT - I see he's currently 4-1, perhaps I've got this spectacularly wrong :)
you're not kidding Easy. I can handle losing any player, Bennett included, with such a brilliant manager. But losing Gus the kingpin of everything, It scares the pants off me, I cannot contemplate it
I too am worried about losing Gus (not this summer). I'm having a mini crisis, I feel we can't win - we'll either be rubbish in the championship, or if we do well, decent teams will be after him and we'll lose out.

Exactly - I expect to hear quotes in the next couple of weeks along the lines of "as you are aware we have pursued various lines of enquiry regarding the vacant manager's position, but with Mark Hughes now available, he is the outstanding candidate".

I feel like I'm going out with Claudia Schiffer. Its just so utterly BRILLIANT it feels like its simply too good to be true, and every minute I keep thinking she's going to ditch me for Richard Gere.

I have never loved another Albion manager...another man as much as I love Gus. I just cannot imagine life without him now.

Scary innit.

Frankly, yes.

I will concede that I have not known such manlove/bromance for an Albion manager before although it is is justified. For me if I met Mr. Poyet (haven't been introduced to him so it would have to be Mr.) I would say "damn fine show Mr Poyet" and give him a firm manly handshake. Don't hold with all this kissy kissy stuff.

I don't see Gus leaving this summer and this is a bit of a non story to be honest. If we have a good season then maybe but at the moment the only clubs who would take a risk on him would not be worth him leaving for. Sadly, he will leave one day and I will be gutted when it happens. However, when he goes he will hopefully leave a lasting legacy and we will be in a position to attract another quality manager. I do agree though that Poyet is far more important to this club than any player, even Bennett.

Anyone remember the Seagulls Over London meeting, where Gus said that he would never APPLY for a manager's job? If they want him that badly, they will simply offer him the job, with no-one else in contention. He clearly wants to move on eventually, but he wants to go to a club that respects him as much as he respects them. That, I suspect, will be a very short list.

so was this private jet off to pick Gus up from Barbados where it seems he has spent a few days telling random people about transfers and wages.....both stories sound like bullshit to me.

At the moment LB. That list might be a bit bigger come spring of next year.

Why all the comparisons between Gus and Martinez? Martinez did leave a club similar to ours (Swansea) to take the Wigan job who I would say are very much smaller than Villa. The fact he turned down Villa is a strange one but I don't think the situation between Gus and Martinez can be compared

Hughes was a stop gap for them as much as for him, they only offered a limited contract and probably limited transfer budget. i reckon he stood down because he can see alot of potentially bigger oppurtunities this year, i fancy he will end up at Chelsea with Hiddink as Director of football.

the only people thinking Gus will be off to a premiership club are Brighton fans. he has everything a manager would want right now, the backing of the chairman, the money to compete at the level, open licence to dictate his style of football, fans on side. and a realistic, positive challenge: why go and be a mid-table premiership club and fight relegation, verses getting a club promted. for a club like Villa, Gus ticks none of the boxes, and im not sure Villa would tick so many for Gus either.
