http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2002564/Patrick-Collins-Steve-McClaren-chance.html

article about Steve McLaren (and fans opposition) mainly, in middle it says:

"Villa appeared unconfident, unconvinced of their own judgment when dealing with McClaren. Just as they seemed bewildered in their attitude to Brighton’s Gus Poyet, for whom they are said to have booked a private plane, and then hurriedly cancelled it."

Strange how it is so casually dropped in there, with no explanation.

Luckily, as I have read Villa fans forums, only 2 people in a one huge poll voted for Poyet. Most argue he's not experienced enough yet (even though some want him). So if they were so easily swayed by fans forums on McLaren, hopefully Poyet also, as with 1 full seasons experience in league 1 he would be a gamble.

It is weird ATFC its buried in the article like that

But main question is why did Villa cancel it, change of heart from them or a polite F**k off from Bloom or Poyet?

A mildly alarming revelation, that.

My money would be it ended on a "don't even bother" from Gus. I genuinely believe he is a man with a mission, a project at the Albion, and he is not going to ditch that lightly. I think he has a Martinez-type loyalty in him, a sense that he's started something he hasn't yet finished.

I know LOYALTY is such a rare commodity in this game, and perhaps I am being hopelessly naive, but I really do feel we have that with Gus. I would be utterly crushed like never before if he disproved that, but I don't think he will.

Listening to talksport this afternoon (yes I know), the consensus seemed to be that the whole Martinez thing was a smokescreen, as they did indeed tap up Hughes and he will become their manager on 1st July when his Fulham contract expires. Perhaps they originally thought Poyet could be that smokescreen?

you're not kidding Easy. I can handle losing any player, Bennett included, with such a brilliant manager. But losing Gus the kingpin of everything, It scares the pants off me, I cannot contemplate it

I feel like I'm going out with Claudia Schiffer. Its just so utterly BRILLIANT it feels like its simply too good to be true, and every minute I keep thinking she's going to ditch me for Richard Gere.

I have never loved another Albion manager...another man as much as I love Gus. I just cannot imagine life without him now.

Scary innit.

I was discussing all these going-ons with a Villa fan yesterday, whether he'd prefer Martinez, Benitez or McLaren, and I'd forgotten all about Hughes. Surely his resigning the Fulham job points 100% to him being the next manager. Incidentally my Villa mate would prefer McLaren

Why would they sound out Martinez and invite him for talks if they were always going to give it to Hughes anyway ? Naah, I don't buy that.

They might END UP with Hughes, being as he's burned his bridges and is kicking his heels now. But after this Martinez business, whoever Villa appoint now, they can't pretend he was first choice.

The way Villa are fannying about, trying to make an appointment, without a clue what they are doing, suggests to ME that it's not a job to take. For someone like Gus, who knows a thousand times as much as I do, it must be a complete no-brainer. He's not going there.

I don't pretend to know how managers are normally recruited, but you can't deny this has all been odd. Firstly Wigan allowing to let Martinez talk, and then Whelan confidently predicting he wouldn't go, and all pundits straight away saying it wouldn't happen. Yet Martinez goes there and talks to them anyway, and says no. Despite Villa blatantly being a bigger club in a better position than Wigan. Smacks to me of a fix.

I dunno why - not sure if they would have broken any rules but perhaps they want to distance themselves from looking like they tapped up Hughes. Would certainly work as, as you have demonstrated, it seems to make it obvious that they clearly DIDN'T have Hughes lined up...

No, he didn't.

Didn't even bother going for the interview. He wasn't interested - I think thats fairly heroic, and certainly refreshing. I always thought well of him beforehand, but that just raised my opinion of him further. And I have an inkling that Gus is made of the same stuff.

In last week's Grauniad there was a suggestion Hughes was out of the running for the Villa job as Lerner was unimpressed with his walking out on Fulham. I'd kind of like it to be true because I do sympathise somewhat. I think Fulham is a good club to be at. They're fairly secure and stable, not skint, chairman might be bonkers but he's been pretty loyal to his managers, the squad is decent etc.

It's not the top job in the prem but you could certainly do a lot worse, and Hughes just ditching them after one half arsed season smacks of overambition and disloyalty. Serves him right if it costs him the Villa job. Not that I want them coming anywhere near Gus obviously

Whoever goes to Villa will be expected to work miracles, they are without doubt a big club that is in the doldrums. Given that their best players want out anybody who takes over is on a hiding to nothing. Best to stick with us as we're on the up but don't have the expectations of a club like Villa.

Yeah I seriously don't see how anyone is going to turn around Villa. They are in debt, they don't have anything close to the income of the top 4 + Liverpool. They have just lost Young, and Downing has expressed a desire to move on. Serious kudos if someone manages to drag them around to pushing the top 4.

Sunday papers saying Mcleish now top of Villas list.......that will make him popular with the Blue half of Birmingham and would be surprised if Villa fans would take to well to him........I cant see Gus wanting that job at the moment, i dont think he will go anywhere till he feels he cant take us any further forward which would seem a long way off at the moment.

That is my view of the whole episode and must admit was concerned as I think Villa are definitely the size and type of club Gus would go to before Chelsea or Spurs but perhaps and hoping he can take us to a similar level before he moves on.

I've come back home.
I have to agree with the sentiments above. Easy I agree it is a concern, but I remain confident that much like martinez, gus believes he is unfinished here and has probably sat down done the good old 'pro's and cons' on a piece of paper and it has showed him that staying with a club that has no debt, full managerial control, little press intrusion (allows him to make a mistake or two as he learns managment) and a squad he has molded in his vision.

There is obviously a very attractive pull towards a club like villa but I honestly believe that gus and tony sing of the same song sheet and know there is a very real posibility that we could be challenging for playoffs next season. So the question I think gus has answered is 'stick with a club that can play my football or start again'. The answer is stick.
