Surely the pens could have been taken at the away end if the Police Dog Control Unit were deployed as a deterrent to Brighton fans getting on the pitch in the event of us winning the tie ?

that would not look good.. the stewards have primacy in the ground unless it becomes over and above what they are expected to deal with. Dogs would only be deployed in the stadium if there had been major disorder.

I can see the sense in the decision. Although I think it is very sad that the captains and the ref can't decide as in olden times. But if thats waht has been decided you can't blame PC BHA for giving the police's view.

Actually I was glad at the time the decision was made because I was nearer that end and also I reckon taking them in front of your own fans can add a mental pressure. It didn't work out though, and the shear abuse Birchall got must have effected that final kick.

Giraffe, I have to agree with you, its much better if the captains decide via the toss of a coin and most of the time that is still the way it is done. I guess the club (Luton) were aware of what a huge game last night was for them and if they had lost, it would have been season over. It was only a few weeks ago that they had issues against Bradford and the club were mindful that did not happen again.

Thanks for the reply , I was thinking that the mere appearance of barking and snarling German Shepherd police dogs would keep the away supporters under control. I and most Brighton fans would be sensible enough to realise they are working dogs responding to a handlers commands.

That's the problem.. they "mostly" respond to their handlers commands!!!!

So its the police's fault that they lost??!!!!!! If that is the case, then i am totally guilty as i was party to the decision...

Did I say that? Jesus, talking about a blind leap of understanding.

Pitch invasions usually take place for the fans to mob their heroes. If their heroes are not on the pitch, there is less likely to be an invasion. Therefore, assuming that Health & Safety must dictate terms, why are the penalties not taken at the end nearest the tunnel?

You are quite right, but the distance from the old away end at Withdean to the goal is a lot further than about a foot at Kenilworth Road...

So essentially any reference to penalties at Withdean is a bit of a red herring then officer

TLO - I have stated the reasoning for the decision already.

So it doesn't bother you that your decision (along with Luton stewards/police) might lose Micky Adams his job. Whatever your defence is, the fact remains that there was a fair chance that the game was going to go to penalties before kick off and your decision gave one team a huge advantage. I thought I watched a fair sport but apparently not.

I agree with this, the reasoning is totally flawed. On this basis, the entire game should be staged at one end of the pitch.

I suppose there is the concept that a penalty shootout is five minutes of pure tension but then again if the away team is 1-0 down and going for the title with 10 minutes to go, that too will be incredible tension. Are we to assume that the Peelers will come on to the pitch and ask the players to calm down a bit and play the ball around in the middle third of the pitch for 10 minutes or so?

Very disappointing that we start from a positionj of assuming a pitch invasion will happen.

I'd be interested to see the stats regarding whether penalties are more likely to be successful if taken in front of friendly (as opposed to hostile) fans.

I bet it make chuff all difference. I've got a whole box of straws here, if anybody else wants to clutch one.

I didn't think you were hon - just thought you might've picked up a bit of the local knowledge of all things 'fishy'.

Well avoided then, it must be tough..
My local knowledge extends to working in a fish factory , absolutely the WORST job in my life.
