My recollection is also that the player made very clear noises that he was interested in playing in the premiership. Our pitch was very much along the lines of join us and we might well get you there next season. I don't think it was about the money at the end of the day, I think we fell short of meeting the player's ambition.

They could offer him guaranteed medals, playing in front of 50,000 a week, and a chance to play in the Champions League. We couldn't.
