I'm not surprised inflation rose to 3.5% when in April there were price increases to council tax , broadband , gas and electric , water , Sky TV , plus employers NI going up. Kemi Badenough said Starmer had lost control of the economy when she knew all the time inflation was going to rise.

Clearly the right thing to do - but only done because of the local election results.

Let's see what the revised thresholds are.
I’d imagine every may as is always the Government gets a bloody nose and then flip flops 🩴

Anyone who doesn’t think it’s worth voting in LE’s should remember their vote sends a message to central Government

Labour will have to work a miracle to get my vote back. Getting rid of Starmer would help, but I don't know who I can trust within the party now, certainly nobody in the current cabinet, they are all stained by Starmer. Reforms rise should sort out this current labour shit show, with any hope.

I reckon it will be pension income under £40k p.a. The costs will be offset from Rayner's raid on rich savers.

I was merely correcting the "Really not sure why it was unexpected" comment. I'm not trying to score petty political points - I'll wait for the WFA U-turn for that.

A rise in inflation was absolutely expected. But not quite as high as has been recorded.

I remember at the time it was introduced that the vast majority (including the two of us) thought that the policy to remove WFA from all pensioners regardless was a good policy (particularly the ones with a few million, the ones living in warmer climates abroad, the ones paying higher rate income tax etc) but the big issue, as we agreed at the time, was that the cut off was set too low.

So if the cut off is adjusted upwards, I would think that same vast majority would be very happy with that and wouldn't use it to try and score petty political points. After all, it's not as if the policy is being reversed, u-turned or flip flopped is it

Definitely politics, things so often are. Good news for the people that needed the money but missed out.

I said at the time it would become their LibDems student loans millstone.

I'm disappointed about the reversal of the winter fuel allowance. I'm hoping that the changes will benefit those who really need it, rather than so many rich pensioners like it was previously. Knowing this government, I'm optimistic that this will be the case.

It is quite clear that Starmer and his government are trying to address their unpopularity amongst the electorate that is so influenced by the right-wing media, so I have to respect them for addressing yet another problem.

Starmer really seems to be the greatest leader in a generation. I wish the right-wing media wasn't so influential, as we really need to keep this government for the sake of the country... but I fear the global capitalist regime will win and some absolute fuckwits like Reform will get into power, and that'll be game over.

Yeah, all those wealthy pensioners who didn’t get WFA, the ones on the really big money like £11,900, f*** ‘em, cant they just go to the Bahamas in the winter to stay warm, like everyone else earning that kind of money?

:shootself

That is an example of someone who does need it (and still continued to receive it after the changes), you absolute moron.

Examples of some people that didn't need it, but still got it by default, were the wealthy pensioners with £1m+ estates (funded by the taxes of working people).

You have to respect them for solving a problem they created? How does that work?

Agree what you say about Reform though

A previous government created it during a considerably better economic time.

Subsequent governments kept it in place as their main priority was appeasing their main voter base (wealthy pensioners).

Fair enough. I assumed you thought scrapping the WFP (for most) was a bad thing

The problem Labour had was trying to introduce means testing cheaply. No point introducing means testing which costs more to administer than you save. So any change will need to be quick & easy to implement. I did think at the time something like the £50k cap on Child Benefit would have been quite easy to do.

40k would be ridiculously high, and pretty minimal saving. also doesn't seem anyone wants to go after savers tax benefits, but they could link to ISA's, if you have one no WFA.
