Couple of factors

Proximity to source, e.g. how long the chain is of people who've been invited down to you. I'm fairly close to source, the people I've invited are one further down.

Amount of mail you send/receive (and
how genuine that mail is, e.g. not spam).

Wheter or not they're giving invites at all at the time.

This affects wheter you get them or not, and how many you get.

1GB of storage, no graphical ads, interface feels like a real email client, excellent spam filter, "Conversations" system stores email conversations like forum threads.

Because it is new and not generally available yet there is a certain amount of kudos in having a GMail account.

I'm pleased with my Gmail account but one problem is that any emails sent to Hotmail users automatically ends up in their trash folder.

I smell a conspiracy here...

Hotmail is incredibly scared of losing the ad revenue

Then again, any mail sent by hotmail users to other hotmail users they've never sent a mail to before is also marked spam...
