I have an iPhone 3G with not very good battery life and where the on switch has come off. It was in that condition for a good 6 months before I upgraded to iPhone 4, so I found workarounds for those flaws. The areas where it works fine is that you can make calls, text, email, download and listen to music, watch video, sync to your computer etc...
