What a really good film.

Tried to keep to the book, but the end was totally different, although it did capture the horrendous treatment the Germans meeted out to the Italians.

And Penny Cruz was just fabulous.

Well worth the License Fee

I preferred the book although I was disappointed with the ending.

Always thought the book was great until the final third which fails both as literature and as history (which is why so many Greeks felt insulted by it).

I lived on a little Greek island years ago which had spent most of the war occupied by Italians, who are remembered with no particular animosity and even some affection; unfortunately, when Italy capitulated and the Italians went home the island was taken over by a German garrison who, not long before they pulled out, murdered the entire male population over the age of 14 (or at least those who didn't happen to be out fishing at the time) in the village square.

Although there was still anger about this even when I lived there at the beginning of the 90s, the islanders didn't really have anything against Germans as a people, and certainly a number of German families actually lived in the village when I was there; in fact, it was the scars of the civil war which were considerably more apparent, and many old hatreds from that time were still being carefully nurtured down the generations.

this book is definitely my favourite read ever. Was a little disappointed by the film as it missed out a lot of the key characters.
perhaps reading this novel on a greek island might be the reason why i love it so much.
can't believe anyone could fall asleep through it??

Deeply flawed novel. Takes far too long to get into it and then skirts over 50 years of Greek history in about 25 pages! Shockingly bad. And as for the film..Nicholas Cage is just dreadful in the film.. wooden and has a terrible accent.

Weak all round.

Totally different...in the film, Cpt Corelli came back in 1947 and said he couldn't live without Perugia, in the book he came back in the late 1980's when they were both old people and she was very angry with him that he had not come back for her.

They ended up going off on a motor bike together, which was also something the author made more of during the book. ( Corelli's motorbike)

Also there was more about his partner, who fell in front of him when the nasty germans were machine gunning the Italians......it was explained that his partner loved him ( He was Gay)

Having read the book but not seen the film, what reference if any does the film make to the civil war and it's aftermath ?

It was the people keeping shotguns in their beds that worried me !

None what so ever! They also missed out the whole chunk about the Italians and Greeks fighting before the invasion of Kefelonia

I thought the description of ending was crucial to the book and understanding the relationship between the two main characters, in the film, it was totall changed

Not as much as that particular episode worried me, I can tell you! Why do you think I never went back?
