[Misc] Anyone keep chickens? WTAF did I agree to it?

I don't like it when neighbours get chickens here, it can be a dangerous game.
Chickens attract mice and rats, who then attract snakes. There is only one snake over here that is non venomous, the rest will kill you, we have to be more vigilant now.
I get my eggs from a farmshop up the road, all organic and just $5 a dozen, that is about 2.50 in your money.
We take an empty box and they get filled from trays.

I think I read that seven of the ten most deadliest snakes are Australian citizens. What with your spiders it's a surprise anyone reaches adulthood over there.

I was once bitten by a bull ant and soon knew about it. In Sydney something bit me on my foreskin. I don't know how (humour invited). That was an embarrassing itchy but not unpleasant sensation. Taught me not walk around bare footed, although I was never naked !

In December last year a redback spider crawled down my shirt.
It bit me twice before I pulled the shirt off and killed it.
I was hospitalised and had anti venom treatment. I couldn't work for a couple of days and was advised to not get bitten again for at least 6 months.
Anything that crawls gets killed now, can't risk it .

An irony you may already be aware of, chicken feed isn't that cheap,

My nextdoor neighbour started keeping chickens a couple of years ago. I saw him the other day and he said they were ready to knock it on the head - the cost of feed was one of the factors he mentioned.

Same thing in Brighton - without the venomous snakes. Neighbour & friend got chickens. The rats turned up soon after followed by the foxes. Neighbour & friend leaves after several years of chicken ownership. Rat sightings now commonplace. New owners remove chicken coop to reveal extraordinary network of rat runs deep in the ground. Rats move on to find new food source as do the foxes.
