Check out Myth TV the IR unit changes the channel on your sky box or ntl or freeview box...

So it can be done with Myth TV then ...

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the Myth is brilliant... if you don't mind the cost, effort and hassle.

But most people - and certainly most females - would run a mile from it.

Which hard disk PVR allows you to records from an external source?

Tevion Something and JVC Something else. Both will record from SCART, firewire or analogue RF inputs. I'll get the names for you when I get home.

The cheap ones on sale all around the UK are Freeview PVRs, you need to find an older-fashioned one effectively...

I've got a Panasonic DMR-E85H. Had it a couple of years and probably the best gadget I ever bought. Records up to 40 hours on the HDD on SP, but LP is acceptable quality too. Also records on to DVD-RAM, which means you can keep the programmes you like for good. There are very simple editing features too.

DVD-RAM is a limited format (mainly Panasonic) but has two big advantages... the discs can be used far more times than other formats - something like 100,000 and, far more importantly, it allows "time slip" i.e. you can start watching a programme before it's even finished recording, which is brilliant. You'll never see an advert again.

JVC and a few, quietly released and unadvertised Sonys and thats it. My PC can read them, Sony drive, but thats about it. Discs are indestructable, etc...

The Betamax of the DVD format war :jester:

Virgin do a PVR don't they? If they don't, they soon will.

I wouldn't bother with a DVD recorder, personally, and a PC media centre is way beyond what you need.

V+ with three tuners allowing you to record 2 progs while watching a third.

Usually less than 2 weeks to get one now the initial rush is over.

Works well and allows easy transfer to DVD too.

I also recommend the Humax 9200. Fantastic piece of kit.
(They have a useful website too)
Be aware though that it cannot record from external sources - so no good if you have sky. Comes with 2 freeview tuners so you can record two channels at the same time. Doesn't play DVDs though.

Christ that was close! I was on the verge of buying one of those to link up to Virgin.
So are you saying that you can record just Freeview on it. Are you able to record Channels 1-5 on it too?

Well, I bought one of the Sony RDR-HXD series (can't remember the number off the top of my head - freeview, big HDD), and I'm very pleased with it, it means I can watch stuff whilst recording something else.

Playback of recorded stuff and DVDs is good, sounds good through the surround amp too.

Oh, and it upscales for HD screens too.

Yes just freeview - which does of course have channels 1-5 on it - assuming that you can get freeview......
