In which case at what point does it cease to be a set piece, and start open play again? Once it's in play, it's in play.

Scoring direct from a penalty or, arguably, a free kick would not be open play, clearly, but for my money, once you take a corner, it's anybody's ball. By your logic, a team who take a corner (or a throw in, for argument's sake) short, ping it around neatly between eight different players for a couple of minutes without the opposition getting close to the ball, and then stroke it into the bottom corner, haven't scored from open play. Not only that, but every phase of the game starts with some kind of stoppage, so where do you draw a line?

The term set piece or set play is used in association football and rugby to refer to a situation when the ball is returned to open play following a stoppage, particularly in a forward area of the pitch. Edit: Just remembered that Zidane nodded both goals with the first touch of the incoming corner, which is I would argue not open play. Like you say, if it had been touched by a few players and moved about a bit, then it probably could be called open play
